Lowest Tolerance Knives

Why do people have to hate on Greg Medford? He's a freaking great guy who designs awesome knives and he stands 100% behind his work. I've owned several of his knives, and they have all been rock solid, bar none. I think they've got about the tightest tolerances I've ever experienced in a folding knife. The CRK Sebenza 21 is a great knife as well.

The knife in your picture, was it designed with that wide opening hole so that if you're out in the ocean and your boat anchor breaks off, you can then thread the chain through the blade and use that instead? I'm kidding man... :p it's a cool looking knife. I'm not a Medford fan tho, mostly because they aren't great slicers, boast about being super tough but yet i hear have garbage conditions about dismantling, plus use a frame lock. Frame locks aren't hard use tools, a 4Max would out work any Medford because it's purpose built and slices like crazy still. Plus "overbuilt" knives are only as tough as their weakest link, usually the locks. Plus all the videos of Medford talking just make me want to vomit. Just my opinion.

I don't believe they have good tolerances. I mean they use like multiple washers in the pivot.

I know some may not like this, but i think benchmade has some very well engineered knives. Their execution in manufacturing can be a different story though. I have always been impressed with benchmade engineering. With spyderco, i have mostly been impressed with their manufacturing and design.
I don t know what knife engineering refers to.

Greg is cool as hell. He reminds me of the super nice, kind of racist uncle that served in the military. He says some things that are a bit outdated, but he means well and works hard, and loves his country and family. He grew on me the more I watched.

Anyway, their knives started off rough. Poor finish, uneven construction, high prices. But, if you've been paying attention, he's become pretty extreme about fit and finish and tolerances. He makes everyone put any screw dropped during builds into a box to be inspected for scratches, he top of the line CNC and machining now, he pours over every knife, making sure they are perfect. It's pretty rad. I want a a Medford now. Probably a Dress Marader. It's actually thin, light and pocketable. Looks like it may even cut.

KAI makes knives with ZERO tolerance :D

Meaning they follow no tolerances, just make up whatever BS tolerances they can think of. Had 4 ZT's, and while all great designs, the tolerances and craftsmanship were greatly lacking (blade play, un-smooth opening, lockbars that slide all the way to the opposite side, edge's that weren't radiused or chamfered, and much more), overpriced kershaw's due to materials used.

As for the thread, CRK is the best I've personally ever come in contact with, and I can't imagine tolerances being any better or tighter. Reate and WE have fairly phenomenal tolerances as well, with Lionsteel following not far behind. Haven't branched outside of the ~$600-$700 range yet.

Lol fairly phenomenal is impossible!

I think besides issues of style or function, the reason Greg Medford catches so much controversy is because he doesn't stand behind his product 100%.

If you open the knife to service it or lube it, even if you broke nothing causes your Medford warranty to void. Infact there is a whole list of things you aren't supposed to do to your Medford lest you void its warranty. For a super overbuilt folder he wants you to baby his knives lest someone damage one under warranty and he has to fix it in his dime.

(Btw, I am not saying he isn't a great guy. I never met him but from what I've seen he seems like a good dude.)
