Birthdays coming up and I'm looking for a knife for my gift. I need to keep it under 150. I am looking to get a smallish but stout fixed blade for hiking. I usually end up carrying 4 or more knives in my bag ( I'm very indecisive) but now I'm trying to get into ultralight hiking. That being said, I do not feel comfortable in the woods without a fixed blade. I am looking at LT Wright, because I like their designs and I like the company.
My two picks are currently the Next-Gen in D2, or the cheaper Bushcraft HC in 1075. I know that it won't hold an edge as long but how does it perform under LT Wrights specs? Is the edge hard enough to get sharp? I don't have any experience with 1075 but I have had similar carbon steels that were too soft to get real sharp.
Or would it be wiser to simply stick with D2?
My uses would be carving, food prep, probably basic "bushcraft" stuff, i simply prefer something heavier duty than a mora. I'm also open to other ideas, however I'd like to keep it carbon steel and something I can use, abuse and cherish for a long time. Thanks for your input.

LTW gets good reviews.
I have several knives in D2 and am a believer, but for your stated use, 1075 should do just fine.
The Bushcrafter is very nice and appealing in its stark siimplicity and Id personally go for that.

As for carrying several knives, thats not indecisive....., that just being a knife nut:D

Good luck buying the knife. Let us know which one you went for.

1075 if its heat treatment is right will hold up well. I have used it on several knives and no one has been disappointed yet. I use it with 1084 and 1095 in all my hunters and I have a few out there. if they want a hamon on a knife then I use 1075 from aldo Bruno the nj steel baron. its a fairly easy and forgiving steel. you probably wont notice any difference than if it were from 1095. as far as sharp if it wont peel hair it does not leave here. I cant say about lt wright I don't own one just passing along what I know about the steel type

I used mine all this past summer.. Good edge retention and easy touch-ups!! LT makes some great knives!! John
