Birthdays coming up and I'm looking for a knife for my gift. I need to keep it under 150. I am looking to get a smallish but stout fixed blade for hiking. I usually end up carrying 4 or more knives in my bag ( I'm very indecisive) but now I'm trying to get into ultralight hiking. That being said, I do not feel comfortable in the woods without a fixed blade. I am looking at LT Wright, because I like their designs and I like the company.
My two picks are currently the Next-Gen in D2, or the cheaper Bushcraft HC in 1075. I know that it won't hold an edge as long but how does it perform under LT Wrights specs? Is the edge hard enough to get sharp? I don't have any experience with 1075 but I have had similar carbon steels that were too soft to get real sharp.
Or would it be wiser to simply stick with D2?
My uses would be carving, food prep, probably basic "bushcraft" stuff, i simply prefer something heavier duty than a mora. I'm also open to other ideas, however I'd like to keep it carbon steel and something I can use, abuse and cherish for a long time. Thanks for your input.
