Here are the results. Take note that the sum is bigger than 100% because people choose multiple options.

WD-40 35%
Water 27%
Windex 24%
Honing oil 10%
Soapy water (dishwashing soap) 10%
Mineral oil 8%
Baby oil 5%
Cool Tool 2 5%
Simple Green and water 5%
Tap Magic 3%
Water w/baking soda 3%

Now with a little regrouping of categories we get:
WD-40 35%
Water 27%
Windex 24%
Honing, Mineral & Baby oil 23%
Soapy water (Dishwashing & Simple Green) 15%
Cool Tool 2 & Tap Magic 8%
Water w/baking soda 3%

As you can see there are few favorites but no clear winners. I guess it means that you can get good results with any of the lubricants in this poll. After that choosing which one is a matter of personal preference.

I hope this can be of help to some. Now I need to see what MY favorite is. :D

Thanks for all your help.

I was actually lying in bed thinking about this just a couple minutes ago... somebody needs to do side-by-side testing (same piece of hardened steel, cut into an even number of chunks) of water versus oil, preferably using sandpaper all from the same sheet/pack, starting on fresh paper for each sample, and doing an increasing number of strokes for each pair of samples (a single sample each: five strokes on watered paper, five on oiled, ten on watered, ten on oiled, etc.) I think that would sort out "cut versus polish" pretty well!

Heh, so am I Pad, so am I... I think I'll make my first knife before worrying about polishing lubricants, though.
