lubricating a folder

I use olive oil to lube my folders up after I scrub it out with an old toothbrush. It seems to work great and it doesn't have a nasty after taste like 3 in 1 oil. LOL

not often if at all. in general i use mineral oil (available in any drugstore) on my knives for protection during storage. it's cheap and safe to ingest.

I put some Outers Tri-Lube on a crusty old folder the other day and was very impressed. I usually put a dab of honing oil on the joint when I sharpen a folder.

Tri Flow works great

No oils for me, they attract crud. After a washing I chase that through with WD40. I clean all that out so no detectable trace is left. I then lubricate with dry-slide. Graphite powder for use on fine locks and jewelry mechanisms works well to.

Almost never. IMO, a knife that needs lubrication is usually a knife that has a problem. Oil is just a way of masking the problem.

Adding oil to a perfectly functioning knife seems to cause more trouble than it's worth.

I use white lightening when I get a knife and rarely after that. I like that it is a wax base thus pretty harmless.

I hardly use any lub these days. I'll wash it out with very warm water and Dawn dishwahing detergent, dry thoughly. If there is need of oil, I'll just dampen the end of a paper match with oil and swab in the inside corner of the tang. Open and close it few times and forget about it. Sometimes instead of oil, I'll scrape off some graphite from a pencil and with a fine knife tip drop it in where something is rubing. They haven't put lead in pencils for years, what they are is graphite. fine lub for tight places. And it doesn't atract crud.

If I have used a folder to field dress a deer, it goes right in the ice chest with the quartered parts. Back at the house, or camp, a stiff brush, dishwashing liquid and water as hot as I can stand, then a good cleaning.

Then letting the hot water run over it as hot as it will get for a few seconds. This heats up the metal and after I dry and blow it out the hot metal will continue to dry it.

A drop of 3n1 oil and working the blade and a good wipe down is all that is needed.

If I have used a folder on something like roofing material or other really dirty items. A good cleaning with WD40 and the air compressor until the gunk is gone. A final blow out of the WD40 with the compressor and then a drop of 3n1 on the blade pivot.

WD40 is a cleaner. Not a lubricant

I use a tried and true system with my folders. After each use I wipe the blade on my pants. When this no longer cleans the blade I use warm water and soap. After that I usually dont oil but if I do its with olive oil.
