Lubrication for spydercos

dont have a clue about that one lol, i sure wouldnt wanna eat white lightnen FWIW, its made of petroleum distillates IIRC.

While I wouldn't exactly *want* to eat white lightning its not toxic. The actual lubricant is wax. While it comes in liquid form, the liquid evaporates leaving a dry wax coating on the metal. Militec contains hydrocarbons which are decidedly non-edible.

Can only speak for the FRN spyders...why lubing these at all?

I use my Delica and Endura since...well many years and open/close especially the Delica few dozend times over the day.
Once in a month they get a shower or bath, thats all.

Why not running them dry?

White lightning is parrafin wax in an alcohol carrier. Not sure exactly what kind of alcohol, but since it evaporates all that should be left is the wax (though it does smell a little odd for a while, maybe there's something else)

I just got my first Spyderco. Paramilitary 2 black/black. It feels new right now, obviously. Is it slicked factory. Mine came with a manual that recommends silicon based lubricant. I'm a fisherman and have brand new bottles of both Abu Silicote Reel Lube and Abu Silicote Reel oil. Both are for high quality bearings and to prevent corrosion. Would this be a good option? Lube or oil? Also have Otis military grade gun cleaner and lubricant oil. Just want this knife to last a lifetime, I am very serious about wanting to use the best lubricant possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WELCOME!

Nice necro-bump of a 9yo thread.

Any lube will work. Either of your Abu Garcia products will work just fine. Just keep it clean and lubricated and it will last longer than you will.

BTW, according to the interwebs, there is NO silicone in either product. The Abu Silicote Reel Oil is nothing more than Mineral Oil. You can get pharmacy-grade Mineral Oil for $2/pint.

Old...old...really old thread.

I don't use lubricant on Spydercos or any other modern folding knife. Most modern knives have bronze or teflon washers that are self lubricating and they really never need other lubrication. Well, that's not quite true. When the knives are new, they sometimes feel a bit rough, tight and balky on opening. When that happens, a little drop of oil can help smooth things out until the pivot wears in. After that, I just wash out the knife when dirty.
