I was at a buddies house north of Spokane, WA talking knives and stuff. We were sitting on his porch and I noticed a big wrought iron wagon wheel rim hanging from the roof beam above the railing. It had mild steel cutouts of an elk and mountains etc. welded inside of it. A very decorative use of a wagon wheel. I mentioned how I'd love to get my hands on a wrought iron wagon wheel like that to use for guards etc. on my knives. I told him I'd be very willing to make him a hunting knife in trade for one, if he could find one. On my drive home, about two hours after I had left, my cell phone rang.

He told me that he had already found me one and had picked it up. It's now sitting in his garage waiting for me to pick it up on my next trip up to NE Washington. It's 4 foot diamter, by 4" wide, by 1/4" thick.

i love wrought iron. i have a bunch in 2 grades. a forged chain that has a very very nice pattern. the other has a fainter pattern. my next project is making a wrought iron ring.

I just bought some of Aldo's wrought iron chain. I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival to see the pattern it develops. I bought three links, and the links are about 5 lbs. each. That will give me 15 lbs. of the chain link and the wrought iron wheel. I should have enough to last me a while.
 
what exactly is wrought iron? how do i identify it? i hope thats not a stupid question.
 
Wrought iron is iron that has no carbon or other alloying elements .It does however have a good amount of nonmetallic inclusions .These inclusions give it a very fibrous texture which can be seen when you bend it .Used for decoration such as guards and bolsters on knives that texture is seen when etched.

hay mete that picture looks familiar ;) there was a whole post connected to it i think. LOL
 
Yes I stole it !! I put it in my computer since it's a perfect example but forgot who posted it !
