This is the relative size and distance of the Earth Moon system. As it's not entirely flat to the ecliptic (solar system plane) it doesn't always line up perfectly. Considering the size/distance, it's pretty amazing that we are able to see lunar and solar eclipses, as it is. And when you consider the Earth/Moon/Sun size and distance, a total solar eclipse, where the corona is visible, is a beautifully rare and special occurrence.
