I have had the pleasure of using many great knife designs from some of the best makers in the world and there are a few designs that have really appealed to me
One such design is the HURAK from Sam Lurquin
I simple love this design
Simple put its a big little knife
What I mean by that is simple
The overall knife is just a tad over 10 inches and the blade is just a hair over 5 inches
The handle is every bit as big as the blade
I wear a size Large glove and I like a knife that is designed to handle what ever it has thrown at it and to do that diminutive handles need not apply
Technically the Hurak is a fighter
It's menacing short raised clip is designed to pierce , its slight belly in the blade likes to slash but I have to keep coming back to the large full handle. Its angled to make this knife in saber grip really point well, meaning the angle it positions your wrist in a saber grip is a strong position for the wrist.
But it's not so much a fighter that it would not make for a great hunting knife. Utility knife etc. It's just a really appealing knife to me and I love the control a full sized handle with proper ergonomics provides
Sam put a lot of thought into this design and it shows. One thing is that it's named after a very good dog the other is that this knife is one of his most popular designs.
They come plain to fancy, all done with the same attention to detail and performance.
What has brought on my owed to HURAK rant ?
I just picked up another
I got my first from Sam a few years ago
A fantastic variant made of my favorite synthetic, Micarta and a blade of Maragin steel. No fancy temper line just pure utility
Next, two years ago I was gifted SAMs JS Hurak by Sam. A gesture I will never forget.
This is my Fancy Hurak
At Blade this past year I was picking up two of the greatest Lurquins I have had the pleasure of seeing and I saw a wonderful Black Micarta Hurak with a W 2 blade that sported a lovely wispy temper line. Some other lucky fellow grabbed it but I was very taken with it
Well a few days ago I was contacted by the owner of that Hurak and he was kind enough to let it come my way
It came with one of Jeremy's delightful cross draw sheaths
Now I can really relegate my first Hurak that is made out of Maragin steel to very hard use and not be as concerned
I have done this with Wheeler and Knight designs also
Like I said I love this design
I know a lot of you guys have some beautiful examples
Please post them up
Here is a video I shot awhile back on the design
