Lush Loveless - more Rob Brown's

I've owned a few of Rob's knives and they are extremely well done. I understand a lot of his production comes to the USA but you hardly see any for sale. Here's a Wilderness I once owned:

Chute is still in my collection:

Thanks for that. Now, where's the shop visit pics? :D

Coop

Coop, I phoned Rob today and he is very pleased you like the photographs. I have a picture of my own I would love crit on if you're willing. (Will post in the Photography section in a minute.)

When I was up there in 2011 I was backpacking up into Mozambique using public transport (no joke down here in Africa) and didn't take along a valuable camera. Here are a couple of pictures of Rob at work I took between my bending his ear with a million and one questions :D

The beginning of the knife. Profiled and milled down to size (he wanted things a little thinner)

Shaping up the shoulder grind. This is on the only operation Rob sits down for. He shapes the shoulder grinds on his knives according to a scribed mark made around the edge of a coin.

Here you can see one side completed. This is all pre-heat treat work in Rob's shop.

And outside the workshop, the view! (this taken on my walk from where I was staying to his place)

And turning a little to the left - the Indian Ocean, only a stones throw away. I wish I had this sort of view when I was working!

I hope that satisfies the curiosity. You'll notice he does almost everything with an Optivisor on. But you could tell that just by looking at his knives, couldn't you?

James: This thread gets better and better. I really appreciate the inside look.

Nothing to exclaim about either. His workshop is as tidy as mine. ;) I love the vise-in-a-vise approach.

Please say hi to him for me. I remember him telling me about the view from his house. Take a break: SURE!

Tell him to get on the bus to a USA show someday. :D

Thank you.

Jim

Coop, it's a pleasure. I adopted the vise-in-a-vise trick as soon as I got back and it's a brilliant little trick. What's neat is that it also raises your working height just a bit which is ideal for detail - radiusing operations etc.

I'll drop a big hint ;) I know he's planning to visit family over there sometime - perhaps he'll do well to show his face at a table!

I spent a few days with Rob in January 2012, and what an amazing experience for a young maker to learn from his role-model! Here are some more pics of Rob in his workshop, with the view!

Neill - great that you've got more pics! Would love to meet someday. Do you have plans to exhibit at the Cape Guild Show this year? You would be given a kings welcome, I assure. Fantastic knife btw.

James,
I'm sure we'll meet before the end of the year, will be in CT over Easter!? Exhibiting at the CGS is definitely one of my goals for the year, we are trying to sort out the dates of the Bloemfontein show. The 2 shows fall on the same dates. Thanks for the compliments and the same to you on the Mini Field Knife!

I got all excited when Neill said he'd be in CT soon....

Ohhhhhh, not CT here in the US, but CapeTown in SA. Dang. ;)

Nicely done Neill !

Steven: You have an enviable collection. Between your fast car habit and your knives, we have more than a few things in common! :D

Great! I hope we sort out the dates so you can make it work. Those knives of Steven's are really fantastic. I only dream of finishes like that...
