My old MOB has found itself a new home. But I have a NEW ONE!

I dig the design SO MUCH, that I asked Tad to make me another, with a few small changes. I requested both a lanyard hole, and a pin through the tang. I feel that putting a pin toward the end of the tang will remove any chance the the tang will fail due to the stress riser of a hole drilled through it. Not that it's a big concern- the blade is about 8mm thick!

In addition to these changes, is a non etched, belt finish and the biggest change really is the use of W2 instead of 1095.

The new version weighs 560 grams- 10 grams less than the original.

Tad is extremely excellent with his customer service, and I highly recommend him to anyone who wants a really well made, well finished, hand forged knife. And his pricing is VERY reasonable, (maybe a little too reasonable!).

Thank you, Tad! You did an excellent job on this knife, I can't wait to get er out for a spin!

Very nice indeed. Was there any change to the blade design (apart from steel choice and finish)? The new one looks slightly longer and less wide - but proportions can be very difficult to judge from photos. What are the dimensions of the new piece?

 Looks great Lorien!! Congrats on your score!! Tad sure builds a MEAN knife:thumbup:

that's an impressive and powerful knife! must be fun to use!

what was the reason to choose W2 instead of 1095?

best regards,
hans

I'll be heading out to Sombrio tomorrow, apparently the waves are coming in 20-25" overhead, which is huge for out here. My kid gets to play hooky tomorrow whilst field tripping with her old man.

The MOB2 will accompany us and we'll make sure to get some nice shots with the camera. I love pictures of knives in nature:).

As for the steel material choice, I think Tad wanted to try out the W2 and as far as I know, this might be the first knife he forged with that stuff.
I have a number of 1095 blades, including the first MOB, and the performance has been excellent with the handmade 1095 knives I've got. Factory 1095 stuff is a different matter, and in my experience factory 1095 like Beckers and what not is pretty brittle. I know that's a sweeping generalization, but you know what I mean I hope.

I'm no metallurgist and know vaguely what elemental composition of a steel alloy means. W2 from what I understand has quite a number of various elements which make up its chemistry. It's a little higher in carbon than 1095 but has things like nickel, copper, molybdenum, chromium and vanadium, (albeit only traces of each) which I generally understand make for a little less brittle steel. It's classified as a tool steel, where 1095 is classified as a carbon steel. Might be a bit more corrosion resistant as well.

Besides, 1095 is ultra common, while W2 is a little more 'special':D. And I'm a nerd like that.

Nice blade Lorien!

i just got my Turkey Mtn. chopper in 52100 from Tad a while back. Fantastic blade. Really excellent workmanship.

Wish I had known you wanted to sell the old MOB.

Plans of mice and men...
Well, I didn't get out to check out the surf today, instead I spent most of the day waiting for the propane guy to show up. But I did get out to my neighbour's property to start clearing an overgrown trail out which I've used in the past to take care of the Red Cedars he planted a few years ago.

I REALLY love this blade and handle design you and Mr. Lynch came up with. Looks like the W2 is holding up quite nicely!! :D
