1) Does anyone know a reliable wholesaler(preferably in North America) that sells M2HSS (3/16" thickness at least 1/2" wide)
2) Is there any similar steel to M2 HSS that would have similar properties & hardness?

My mentor used Molybdenum high speed steel (M2 HSS) to make carving knives & tools. Since his passing and the passing of the man he got his materials from I am having difficulty finding a constant & reliable source. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

O1 works for the bigger tools but nothing has the strength & holds an edge as good as M2 when making curved knives or micro curve knives.

Thanks,
Nate

You can either contact Crucible/Carpeneter directly and ask where you might be able to source some. Either directly from them or from another party.

You can also contact Niagara Specialty steel if you want to use CPM-M4.

CPM-M4 has been received quite positively by the knife community.

Niagara Specialty has some USA made M-2 .190/.210 thick in stock if that works. If not you could try a distributor like Penn Tool and Gauges or Precision Marshall but I don't think it will be made in the USA. Like the others above suggest, I think you'll be pleased with CPM M-4 and the price will be comparable to domestic M-2. Niagara, SB Specialty and Jantz probably have some.
