M3 Trench knife (Work in progress)

I would have thought that taking out the material from where the tang would go first then stacking them in order would be the way to go.

After seeing this however I'll stand corrected. If epoxy or glue will leak OUT, it will leak UNTO the void created for the tang as well. I'm thankful for people who know more than I whom I can learn from.
Thanks Ben!

Love your work!

I'm a longtime fan of the M3, despite its shortcomings, particularly in the slashing/slicing area. Nevertheless, it has a panache that no other knife has, in my opinion. It brings thoughts of Normandy and the victory over German fascism and Japanese imperialism. And the blade design carried over through the next decades, through Korea and Vietnam, in the form of various bayonets. I'll be following this project closely and I wish all the best to the maker.

With leather is makes sense to slot them all, but not so much with micarta. For the reasons you listed an others.

Thanks. Yes, it is certainly a purpose built design and slicing isn't it. I did widen the blade by about .100" which will help in the geometry department, but it is still really first and foremost a stabbing tool.

Back at it after the holiday weekend.

Building the guards, I decided to go with zirc on them.

Here's the dagger guard fit up as well.

Drilling out the tang slot.

Rough shaping the handle.

Smoothed out.

All buffed and oiled.

Blade finished.

Next to it's grandpa.

It is completely finished at this point, and so is the sheath. Next up will be finished pics which I hope to take and edit today. Thanks for following along!

You really killed that..... ;)

I love the direction you've been going with these last couple of builds.....your rendition of some classics, please keep them coming!

Awesome work, sir. I'm really liking the modern rendition of a classic blade, especially the stacked micarta handles gor the leather look.

Totally awesome knife just out of curiosity why no pommel? I think you could have done a sweet custom pommel on it. Only thing im seeing that would make it better IMO. But absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks very much guys.
Looks like this will be up for grabs after all. :)

Dig that dagger.

No end cap on the M3? Affixed to the tang with epoxy?

Thanks. It's actually a takedown. There is a bolt in the end of the tang.
