So I was speaking to a craftsman who's work I greatly admire, about having him build me a knife. Now the knife I had in mind looks a bit like a brend model 2 with a 7 inch blade. It would be used as a camp knife/utility type blade. The maker said m390 and I'm very interested in that steel. I did say I thought it may be a bit brittle for that kind of knife and he suggested tempering it down below 60. Just wondering what you guys thoughts are on this and if you have any experience with a bigger fixed blade, made of m390?

Not ideal., That's like putting a lift kit on a Ferrari sports car for off road use.

However, I don't have any first hand experience. You can tell us :)

Seems pretty lengthy for 7" blade.. Bradford uses M390 on their G3, G4, and G5 but switch over to 3V (only) for the G6. I think 3V sounds pretty ideal. Or another high carbon steel like 5160 or 1095.
Would hate for it to break on you :(

If you do go with M390 I would temper it down to 58. Not an expert by any means but from what Iv gathered, sounds about right. But again, I personally wouldn't even consider M390 in a blade over 4.5" and I carry a G3 in M390 for EDC.

Ya those were my thoughts exactly. I think he may be able to find something else. Like you said it woild really suck to break the knife.
