Anybody know how this steel compares to other supersteels in the toughness dept? Also how is this compared to M4 or S90V? I've seen some comparisons that rank M390 with 20CV and M4 in wear resistance, but does its toughness?

This came from a Bohler FAQ

As a custom knifemaker should I use M390 in every knife?
Yes, if edge holding is your top priority and you want every knife to be at least 60 Rc hard. If toughness in a stainless is your number one priority then use Uddeholm ELMAX tempered to 58-59 Rc. If corrosion resistance is most important, Uddeholm VANAX is the choice.

Well, I had some M390 hardened to 61 and have made several large folder blades . I believe it's fantastic stuff !!! The make up must tell you it has more stain resistance than will ever neede. I hollow ground a piece to the old safety razzor thickness and then tested it on the brass rod. It flexed and returned to the original position, but did not crack or stay bent. I will be making all my non Damascus blades from this material. I grind all my blades after hardening. It seems as well to work so well for all aspects of blade making. Frank

Cool, thanks for the responses. I'm assuming its not the greatest on the toughness side, but seems to be better than S90V on toughness with a bit less edge holding.

In our testing we've never had a issue with the toughness of M390 or S90V. I rate the edge holding of M390 and S90V to be equal. The main difference is M390 is easier to finish and sharpen.
