M4 maintenance

Wow, this guy beat me to it. I just rub some Break Free CLP on it too. Works great for guns and knives!! And make sure to clean the knife after heavy use, like using it on foods, anything water based, sweat, etc.

It's m4. Meant to be hard use. Any patina or usage marks it as original. If u fear it getting damaged or losing its factory state it's no longer the tool it's meant to be. I bought one also, but mine will be used. I wont buy it if it won't be used or damaged.

I agree. I bought it to use and it will eventually get some patina. I like to see a flawless blade but I have other knives in stainless so I'm going to use this one and like it whether it stays clean or not. I have another M4 blade that I bought used and it came with a patina. I look at it as a tool and I use it as a tool, a very good tool.

If you keep it wiped off it might still patina but it won't have permanent damage. If you sweat on it or leave meat juice on it you can have problems.

The only ones I have in M4 are Benchmades but I don't do anything to them other than sharpen. Benchmade doesn't let it leave the factory without Cerakote, so I'm not really worried about it. There is a bit of a patina on the part not coated, but that'll go away when I sharpen it. No problem for me

Yeah I do not like the looks of patinas at all. I love looking at my blade and seeing the grains, and shiny ness. I to like to use my knives as tools, however $160 is an expensive tool wehn I could be happier with S110V. Still havent decided yet.

I would stick with stainless in that case. M4 is not a rust magnet but it will tarnish with use. S110v on the other hand is about as stainless as it gets without moving into steels like h1.

this steel choice is why I decided not to buy this one. good steel for a hard use fixed blade, but not a folder IMO. I have one in S35vn and would part with it for anything.

M4 gets a lovely patina:

I lightly tuff-glide my two M4 EDC'd knives once a week. Just a dot of lube and I spread it over the blade with my finger before a very light wipe on a rag. No stains or rust in 2 months now.

Same thing I have used on non stainless blades for years...work great!

I've dipped blades and pocket clips in PCB etchant solution before and I always just mask off the pivot area with some vaseline. Works perfect!

I have used my Break Free CLP knives for cutting up food, etc. I don't leave a greasy film on them and I usually wipe off the blade before cutting food. I don't use it for kitchen knives because they are very stainless as well as being washed and dried shortly after use.

Can anyone actually give me a good explanation as to what exactly a 'patina' is? Im not even sure what it is I just dont like the looks.

A patina is a maintenance step for me. I purposely leave the fruit/vegetables/meat juices on the blade so it will stain. After dinner, I wash with dish detergent, dry and oil with Tuf Glide afterwards and it's an extra barrier against corrosion.

Other than keeping the edge in good shape, my maintenance is minimal. Mostly consists of just wiping, or rinsing & wiping after use.
