M43 vs Dead Cherry Blossum Tree...

After just recently receiving this beautiful Kumar M43 I knew exactly how and where to test it out. I was amazed at the cutting power of the blade as this is the first time I swung a Khuk at anything. I learned quickly where the sweet spot was on the blade and when I struck with that point limbs went flying! I wasn't gentle at all and this blade looks just fine after a quick clean up. I am one happy camper! Thank you Kumar and Yangdu!

I bet ya his father wouldn't have even asked.....lol

Umm my neighbor walked over to say hi and to see what I was up too. When I let him hold the M43 he said HOLY you know what. lol I told him its for squirrels and such. Good thing is I sold him three of those fundraising shirts I'm selling. With an M43 on I bet I can sell them to anyone! Hmm theres and idea.

Funny you say that, he gave me permission last hunting season to hunt on his land. Guess what else I'm bringing over instead of just a pot of venison chili? :-) Now which of my children must I part with.....?????

Munk, I agree! And the poor little thing was so young, so much to live for, it was probably only DORMANT.
Murderer!

Whadaya know, a cherry tree and a blade meet again.
I live less than a mile from the scene of the original alleged crime.

ooh - fun - i might have been tempted to save the crotch of the tree and maybe a couple thick pieces, let them dry slowly, possible handle material down the road :)

Relax Munk the tree was dead, I lost a beautiful one in the front yard as well last year. Some kind of fungus or something killed the two of them. The one in the front of the house was planted 10 years ago and is the birds favorite feeder tree. I was crushed as they were my favorite trees. It had to come down anyway in the spring so I can plant another.

Hey if anyone wants the wood I'll cut it and send it to ya for the postage.

Always great to witness another person becoming infected with HIKV. :D

How far back from the tip is the sweet spot on yours? If you strike with the tip, do you get much hand shock?

Possum I'd have to say that last picture shows it pretty well. Not much hand shock at all and I a pretty messed up hand so I would have felt if. I've found thin gloves are the best when doing any serious cutting but I was too lazy to run inside and get them. Plus I was losing the light and wanted to get the pictures taken so I could share them with you guys.

You don't know how many times I've been cutting down a tree and thinking:
"Officer, I didn't see that green patch on the top until it was too late...."
(You are not allowed to harvest a green tree unless marked by special dispensation or on private land) A few trees I've felled have had a couple handfulls of green needles....yikes...

No Earth Firster here.

Thanks for the pics Billy. Isn't that the M43 that was won off the DOTD a few days ago. Really nice with the elk handle. I have one I bought on auction from MichiganKnives that has what appears to be a rosewood handle. So far I like it too much to sharpen it. When you get another khuk, as you surely will, let us know how it chops relative to the M43. I've been curious because the M43 has a much more pronounced drop than the other models. Would that make it a better chopper because it gives you more of what a khuk is all about? I don't know.

Now you just have to carve that tree into a set of wooden dentures like old GW did. Nice pics and review. Pretty knife too.

Munk, honest this thing was dead as a doornail for a the entire year last year. I could pull out the stump by kicking it over. The one in front is a real shame, I'll find some pics of them in bloom and you'll see why it really stinks. The one is front is splitting down the middle but had about 1/3 of it still alive last year. I'd never cut down a tree that didn't have to be cut down just to play with a knife or saw. I'm the only one in my neighborhood that even planted trees! I don't know how these people stand having no trees on their yard for shade and for the critters. Well they never go further than there decks so I guess that explains it. We have quite the wildlife habitat here on our little acre of the world. Blue birds & tree swallows come every spring and we are good for at least a few broods of tree swallows and if we're lucky two or up to four of blue birds. We have 5 houses so it depends on who gets here first. lol Actually they are camo painted bird barracks. They will be houses again when the war is over. :-) Wife goes through 50LBS of birdseed a week! That's not even counting the niger seed$$ for the Gold finches and peanuts for the nuthacters, blue jays, titmouse, what else chickadees OH and I can't forget the BOXES of suet we go through for the Red Belly woodpeckers and Downy's. I think I have them all covered, opps almost forgot the DUCKS that fly in for a less than graceful landing on the lawn for some sunflower seeds. So trust me Munk, I'm an arborist and wouldn't do something stupid to a beautiful tree. In your quote you mentioned "officer" are you in the forest service in MT? We'll be moving out to Clark County, ID in a year or so. My wife's grandmother worked for the Idaho forest service for years and her grandfather was county commissioner for years as well. Keep up the good work, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Bwray,

Yes this is the Elk Kumar M43 from one of the recent DOTD. Oh and I've found Bill from Michigan Knives has been outstanding to do business with as well.

What khuk would you like to see tested? I can go to my in-laws or in the woods behind me and cut up some deadfall. Plenty of it this year with the ice and wind we've had in southern NY.

I am a full fledged HIKV infected chopper, Yvsa said I had to have 10+ to be infected, well I'd say I am in the near final stages of being completely done in. My postmaster said to me today when I picked up a package from Yangdu "your keeping that company in business", I told him I'm trying. lol

I think an 18" AK or GRS would make a good comparison, except that the M43, mine at least, is really only 17". The weights are comparable though so maybe that's okay. BTW, the reason I'm interested in this comparison is that I'm trying to decide whether to sharpen and use my M43 or keep it pristine. If the M43 is not a standout chopper I will probably leave it alone because I have other options as a field blade. Thanks.
