United Cutlery M48 or SOG Fusion Tactical Tomahawk?

which is better built, more likely to survive abuse etc?

I like the looks of the M48 better, been thinking about getting one, they got some options in color and length if you look around.

Already have the Fusion... that's why i'm asking. I am wondering if the M48 is as good

I have beaten my fusion to death and done things with it that you should NEVER do with a hawk, and it has held up amazingly well

After throwing it several hundred times into a large pine target, and using it to dismember 3 deer, it is still not in need of sharpening

I am amazed by the quality of the SOG and don't want to buy the M48 unless it is at least as good

Good to hear. My SOG Fusion should be here in a week or 2. My ultimate goal is to have an aluminum thick wall handle made, with a threaded cap/end/firesteel & some space for tinder inside. That may be a few years down the road though.

That will bring me up to 4 hawks. CS Trail Hawk, Spike Hawk, Trench hawk, SOG Fusion.

Just made my first attempt at convexing the Trail Hawk. Came out OK, VERY shiney, sharpness is not where i want it yet though. Went 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500 grit, on my home made convex-er. (2 large Lowes paint stirring sticks epoxied together with 2 strips of mousepad epoxied on each side.)

My SOG Fusion works very well for entrance, extraction, search, deconstruction. The head and spike penetrate good thru most materials, objects and shapes. I'm glad it does not stick much at all. If I wanted the spike to stick in say a wood log, like my Ranger Spike hawk. I would need to do some reprofiling. I guess for wood work / bushcraft in general, I would need to reprofile edge and spike much thinner.

From the manufacturers:

SOG Fusion- 420 steel, A dystopian world is on the horizon and when we all get there you wont want to go without the SOG Tactical Tomahawk strapped to your waist. While you could easily use this badass stainless steel blade for normal camping activities, itll do much better when you have to sever the heads of human-seeking killer robots and filthy leather-clad men with Australian accents. The fiberglass reinforced nylon handle will withstand a misguided blow to an obstacle or an inadvertent strike to an invaders AK-47 when you miss their soft parts. The black oxide-finished case and blade will withstand corrosion from all the salty blood and goopy oil theyre sure to end up being covered with.

M48- AUS 6 steel, Tactical Tomahawk. Unrelenting ferocity... It is lightweight to be carried all day without added muscle fatigue and the blade of the M48 Hawk offers a wide, upswept axe blade for mammoth chopping, slashing and cutting potential. The secondary edge on the back side of the head is specially sharpened on both edges for a cutting and hooking attack. When combined, the spike and axe head make for an efficient personal defense and breaching tool.

Woah. Those SOG guys are sure practical!

OP- If you're happy with your SOG why are you looking into something different? Only thing I may change about mine is to add a sharpened beard for ripping through stuff. I'd have to get my hands on a better grinder to do it properly so that won't be happening soon. Looks like the beard on the m48 is already sharp, so that's a plus, unless of course you want to pull things without cutting them...damn, now i'm second-guessing sharpening it.

Did you really ask why i want something sharp?

cause i don't have one yet?

I thought that was one of the understood conditions of those of us on this forum :P

if it helps bro my buddy has a fusion and i got my m48 because i didnt want the same thing. he has since bought a m48. i think it gets a bad rap because its tacticool, and made in china. but for the price its a best. ive thrown my spike into thin steel a few hundred times and it holds up, i take it to the beach w me and ive cleaned fish with it, and with extreme abuse im sharpening it every 3 months. for the price its well worth it and im in shock i havent broken it yet but honestly all ive done to it at all is wear down some of the spike. ive also taken it camping and its a very nice chopper, i love the blade shape.

can you tell me what parts exactly are actually SHARP out of the box?

i've heard different things

It's my second winter up here with the M48 and it hasn't let me down yet....+1 M48

The blade is razor sharp. No bullshit it's embarrassing to say but I honestly cut my hand on it the same day I got it just sliding it out of the sheath.

According to the info, the secondary edge on the back side of the head is "specially sharpened" whatever that means

was anything other than the main blade sharp?

"The secondary edge on the back side of the head is specially sharpened on both edges for a cutting and hooking attack."

that is the actual quote as seen here...

http://www.knivesplus.com/m48tacticaltomahawkuc-2765.html

anyone know what it's referring to?

The toe is upswept and sharpened, the heel/beard is sharpened. The spike is double edge sharpened.

They must be calling the back side of the head what most folks here refer to as the beard. But the toe is the top of the bit and the bottom is the heel. So, is it really a beard or achilles tendon?

Somebody gave me a couple of each (I make hawks). I play with them, throw them, modified a couple, cut wood, split wood, did all manner of evil things with them. (shrug) They are okay. Not crazy about the size and shape of the spike and beard of the m48...poked my hand far too many times choking up. I cut them both down and ground them up ...shortened the handle and it is better now. Adding a little bit of texture to both handles made them more sure in grip...something lacking in both. The spike on both need to be sharper. They both throw okay too...

The beard hangs down from the main cutting edge of the hawk or axe when held handle upright. I guess the 'toe' is the top of the edge....never heard 'toe' and 'heel' used on an axe or hawk.

Axe parts for reference
