Anyone have a Springfield M6 Scout (.22 Hornet/.410 Gauge)? Do you carry it with you when you’re in the bush? Does it work as intended? I am hitting a gun show in a couple weeks and hope to find one.

yes they work well...i had one and sold it:grumpy: now i want another...good gun and i like the ability to choose your caliber. only downside is its two shot capability. and the sight are rudimentary at best...accuracy is not so good past 100yds (at least for me it wasnt) but i liked the take down feature and it was light weight and the storage in the stock was cool too....get one and enjoy it...:)

I always wanted one...I hear the .22 barrel is pretty good the .410 does well with slugs but has no choke sho the .410 diminuitive shot charge thins out pretty quick...if you google Vshrake .410 you'll come across a great article on the .410

That is the original article that turned me on about the M6, I was looking at the Henry Survival Rifle, but like the M6 more-better:D.

I have the .22H/.410 M-6 its not a target rifle by any strecth but it will definatly take game,The 22 Hornet gives you extra range over the 22LR and for me the main selling point is the fact I could reload the 22Hornet in the field, with a LEE hand tool.Loading with Hodgdon Lil'Gun and 45 Gr. bullets i'am getting aprox 2700fps wich makes the Hornet a potent little game getter:thumbup:

I am going to be looking for one of these as well. This they would be the ....

I have the .22lr, and have been looking for a .22h for a while now, so good luck.
I took the trigger gaurd off so it folds in half like it was designed, the trigger can be used with a mitten on or it was made with a dip in it to use one finger. The .410 kills tree rats from the top of an oak tree just fine.

I have one in .22 and like it. I modified the sights like vshrike did and it made it much better. However as a backpack gun it is a bit heavy. I've thought about going for the henry for a gun that is about half the weight.

That is one ugly gun! I read through the article at http://outdoors-magazine.com/spip.php?page=article&id_article=55 . I would just add some sort of pouch rather than making the gun more complicated and lumpy. I liked the sling setup. I do like having the shotgun option. I could get by with something like an AR7 for stuff like birds and small mammals, but the shotgun makes up for a lot of accuracy, especially if you injured, hungry, dehydrated and generally scared witless.

The Savage 24C looks like a decent firearm, but I saw a couple going for $450. In wonder if it would just be better to have a 12ga with a light stock. That will take anything in North America and has good self defense properties too. My guess is the weight wouldn't be much different.

The US military has developed a lightweight shotgun system to mount under the barrel of an M16 or M4 and there is a stand alone version that is around 4 pounds. It wouldn't take much engineering to make a civilian survival shotgun of it.

I had one when I was younger, I always hated that thing. The sights weren't too great, and the ergonomics were crap. It was uncomfortable to shoot and to carry. The trigger was easily the biggest deal breaker though. Especially given the scarcity, I'd way rather have something like a Rossi matched pair in 20/.22 or something similar, or just a plain old 12 gauge. You could add the 12 ga and a .22 pistol and get better results, too.

I've had my M6 for a couple years now and absolutely love it. I recommend removing the trigger guard as it allows it to pack down pretty small. Also, invest in another take down pin as it can be easily lost. A rifle buttstock shell holder fits on the buttstock and carries an extra 9 .410 rounds. If you get a M-16/AR 15 30 or 20 round magazine pouch, it will fit too and will hold a fire kit and extra box of .22lr rounds.

Here are a few pics showing its size. I'm 6' to give you an idea of the size and the length of pull. It's short but it isn't meant to be an all day range gun.

I really like the M6. On a winter trip a year ago, we were easily picking off .22lr 50 round empty boxes at 25 yards. It would be no problem using it for squirrel or rabbit or any small game at that distance. I'm upset these are getting hard to come by. I really love mine!

If you see one then buy it they are no longer made.
Can you tell me just how you removed the trigger guard? Did you cut it, punch out the pin, or spread the frame? How easy was the conversion?
Thanks

My gunsmith buddy carefully cut it with a dremel. The pin was stepped and not a simple push pin. They used to use straight pins which made removal much easier. 100% worth it!

I would love to find a m-6 in .2 hornet but mean while I found a old Stevens .22/410 over and under with the plastic looking wood grain patern stock . It breaks dow into a 24" long package and it not to heavy.

Looks like fun, exactly why I want one - aside from the the potential survival capabilities; fun, fun, fun:D

I found one last year at a gun show and it was in pretty bad shape (22lr/.410 park). I think I gave around $130 for it. Be aware, I searched for one of these for about 12 months before I found one. The gun is fun to shoot and I have taken a few squirrels with it already. If you get one be careful taking the trigger assembly apart, it is a real pain getting back together.

gotta love those M6! i've had mine for about 6 years. .22 LR/.410, stainless. i made a complete survival system around it.

i took off the trigger guard, put a detatchable sling swivel in the buttstock, and made my own sling out of 1" tubular webbing. i took a dremel tool to the front sight and under cut it, then painted the rear peep sight and the undercut post site black so they would be clearer to see. i also bought a hammer extention from Cabellas, it works great for winter or when wearing gloves.

on the sling i have 3 knive pouches that make up some of my kit. one contains three winchester #000 5 pellet buckshot shells. another has a SAK , a mini-mag AAA flashlight and a scout mini firestarter. the last has a Silva match case with compass and a home made pivet pin for the gun.

Heres how i made the pin:

i shoot CCI mini-mag HP's through the .22 barrel with very pleasing results. i can also shoot CCI shorts for stealth hunting. the .410 works well with winchester 3" 7 1/2 size shot and i get good paterns with winnie 3 & 5 pellet000 buck shot for possible defense or hunting smaller big game. i have hunted both squirrel and rabbit with both barrels successfully.

on/in the nylon case for it i carry several Uncle Mikes magnum rifle shell holders and fill them with the shotgun shells. i carry a MOLLIE mag pouch with two, 100 rnd boxes of .22 shells, one the mini-mags and one shorts. i also carry some home made snares, fishing kit with yo-yo fishing reels. the case also contains either a CRK&T M-16 4" tanto blade or a Cold Steel ODA knife.

i bought it at Sprotsmans WH at the time for $200, now i wouldnt sell it for any price! i too found Jimbo/VShrake's website and took ideas from him on how to improve the gun. i did try wrapping the barrels with paracord but it warped them and caused it to shoot badly. i do not encourage anyone to try doing that, you can always carry extra cordage on your person.

thanks - Eric

When you cut out the guard did you cut just the guard or did you actually cut and remove the pin? I assume the rear of the trigger guard just slides out of the frame?
Sorry for all the questions but I do not have a schematic of the inner workings.
