M9 Bayonet Models, which are preferred?

Hey all. Ive been looking to get a version of the M9 bayonet, as a survival knife, and for fun to mount on my Remington 870 shotgun. (Its a pump action, and therefore legal to mount :D If it was a semi auto shotgun, like the 1100, it would be a "evil" feature and make it an assault weapon.) I am currently leaning towards the Special Forces Style Survival Sawback Bayonet by Leapers, any ideas or recomendations on this? Or a better price, but this is the lowest Ive found.

Special Forces Style Survival Sawback Bayonet

Thanks for any help or ideas on this.

This probablly isn't much help but...
Unless your heart is set on the M9, I would suggest the new Ontario's the Marines are starting to issue (M10). Overall its just got a better feel to it. It also makes a better field tool. 1sks has them.
If you do go for the M9 I think the lan-cays are the way to go.

If you want my honest opinion, save your money and don't buy that POS. It's also way over priced. For $30 more you can get an Ontario or Lan Cay, which is the real deal. If you want the BEST M9 get a Buck/Phrobis. They cost more than a Ontario because they aren't made any more but are way superior.

Yes, the new Marine Bayonet from Ontario is the by far the best of both worlds as far bayonets are concerned.

OK. Im looking for one that has the wider blade, has the razor back, and all the other stuff. What models would you reccomend, and from what retailers? (URLs if you got em.) Are the M10s use the same mounting system on the lugs as the M9?

Thanks,

John

It's been a while since I've been int he M9 world, but out of all the ones I had the old hard to find Buck/Phrobis collaboration always seemed the best quality to me. After that the Ontario was an impressive jump in quality from the Lan-Cay when they first got the contract a few years back.

Haven't handled an M-10 yet......

Curious as to how you're mounting it, as I haven't seen an 870 with a bayonet lug.

I'd check eBay first. They always have good prices and you may even find a Buck/Phrobis for a good price.

Im looking for the barrel clamp with a lug attached. A bunch of people over at the AR15.com forums have them, so I'm asking around there. Worst case, Ill take a barrel clamp over to my friend, and find a AR15 front sight post with a lug, and let him mill me a clamp with a lug.

Consider duct taping an AK bayonet to it.

As for the M9 as a bayonet...it's not.

It's not even a good knife. Never was.

Will check out the Marine M10. Haven't handled one of those yet.

Ugh!

Wow...all the ex-military guys Ive talked to have done nothing but love the M9, especially as a bayonet, or as one put it, a very nice battle axe when mounted on the M-16.

Well that's about it! For general field tasks they suck.

Too big...

Too thick...

Poorly sharpened and not sharpenable...

Tended to break at the tang (poor heat treatment and structure/design)...

Too heavy for the M16 (front end) + M16 sucks at rifle for bayonet work in the first place (Rangers busted up a buncha rifles doing bayonet drill so they stopped letting them use the real rifle and issued hard rubber rifles with a solid steel rod down the center).

M9 sucks, period.

Plus, most commanders wouldn't / won't allow them to be issued because they (a) break (b) they suck.

In my experience the blade binds too often when chopping, the edge chips easily ( well that might be good if your into saw teeth), the handle rolls in your grip during heavy chopping, the number of grid lines make for too many stress risers, and I was there when one broke after being dropped. Granted it was from the top of an M3CFV turret, but still. It just don't give this Trooper a big warm fuzzy.
IMHO there is more wrong with that knife than two boys gettin nasty in the back of a short red school bus.
:D

Greg hit it the nail on the head. They suck. Heavy pieces of dog doo doo too.

Well, I decided I wanted to see this firsthand, so I ordered this off ebay today, it was shipped today. 40 dollars, so its not too expensive a lesson, and I talked to a few people who had em and they said they were good cept for edge retention was "ok".

Heres what the guy told me when I emailed him asking about them:

M9 is made out of 425 Japanese Carbon Steel with a Rockwell 50 (HRC) hardness. I would personally rate this on par with the original Buck/Phrobis/Phrobis III M9's in overall quality. M9's are all CNC machined using German Axis 4/6 CNC milling machines.

(Isnt 425 crappy steel? At least I wont be afraid to take it hiking with me on my freqent jaunts.)

John

Yes, that steel sucks. I'd be very afraid to take that hiking or anywhere personally. I think he blew a lot of smoke up your ass about it being up to "par" with the Buck/Phrobis in order to make a sale. That's my honest opinion.

Worst case, its a 40 dollar lesson.

Best case, I have a good knife for when I gotta take a whack at things without worring about chipping the blade.
