M9 Bayonet Models, which are preferred?

Wow, flashback: Basic training - Vietnam era - many, many hours of bayonet traing. After all the training our drill instructor (when no officers were around) telling us, "If you hear the command 'fix bayonets' some officer really screwed up bad."

If this was vietnam (being an 18yo male, I have zero real knowledge) Why did someone screw up with there being no fixed front lines? Coulda popped up on top of you Altho, as fas as home defense, Im guessing the judge would like better if you filled them with buckshot than the bayonet if they presented a fear of great bodily harm.
