Mach3 edge chipping, what steel do they use?

I admire the look of open razors, they are some very fine pieces of craftsmanship indeed as the recent pix have shown.

Hello gentlemen.

This being my first post on bladeforums i might as well introduce myself. My name is Claus Christensen and i am from Denmark.

I have a healthy interest in knives and i am here to soak up as much knowledge as i can and hopefully get in to knifemaking my self at some point.

Speaking of straight razors, they are really nothing to be afraid off.
I bought an old one fram a turkish barber in Copenhagen, removed the tarnish and mended the handle with some epoxy and set about getting it sharp, after a little trial and error brought about by lack of patience i ended up with a 3000/8000 grit waterstone. Using a strip of denim as a strop i had my first shave, then bought a leather strop and some diamond paste and now its the only thing i use.

Sharpening is easy as getting a parking ticket and all the rumours about bleeding to death are not true, i practiced on my lower leg (no its not gay to have shaven legs, just dont wear shorts) and i have cut myself 2-3 times in the last 5 months, and all those were within the first month. On the plus side, no ingrown hairs, long turn economy, and it meditation in the bathroom, just like rifle shooting, you CAN not stress while doing it, so it forces you to take it easy in the morning or when ever you do it, and as far as i can tell from this forum, no one here is unwilling to take the traditional slow and skillfull route to a result.

And if anyone here is a sharpnes-fetiscist like me, then you would enjoy spending 10 minutes sharpening your razor, and 15 minutes whittling on a hair you just pulled out of your scalp....

Good luck with the straightrazors.
