Machete and axe people: take a saw along?

For canoe camping I always have both an axe (Snow & Neally 24" Hudson Bay) and a packable buck saw. The saw is a Schmidt pack saw. It takes standard 24" bow saw blades you can get at a hardware store. I don't do a lot of hiking, but the pack saw is very light, so I would still carry it. I would however, carry a smaller axe.

I got these at LL Bean about 12 years ago. They are called Schmidt Pack saws and were produce in Denmark, ME. After much Googling, it appears that these exact type aren't produced any more. The nearest I've found is here:

I have never contacted these folks, but I bookmarked their site in case I ever needed a replacement.

I always have my Pocket Chainsaw with me when I'm camping and hiking. Its so small I stick it in a bag and I forget about till I need it. I use it without the supplied handles, I tied a few loops with paracord and use sticks if needed. I usually carry a machete but even when I have a hatchet I find myself using it.

I plan on getting one of those Opinels though. They just look cool.

Generally no, I don't carry a saw also.

I really like a couple of the pack saws in this thread though.

Lately I have brought a Sandvik Lapplander folding pruning saw along with my GB axe and\or a Same-knife. It is safe and easy for sawing dry (not to thick)trunks up for firewood.

if i'm out car camping i'd take a saw with me and my axe.

if out on a trip where its necesary for me to have an axe such as a wilderness backpacking trip i'd take my pocket chainsaw.

if just out on day hikes or over nighters i take a 7 inch fixed blade and a bahco laplander

:)We have a 37 year old Sandvik 30" bow saw we bought right after our wedding. Saw goes with us on all camping trips. Replaced the blade about 4 years ago. Wouldn't be without it.. :D

A saw is one piece of gear that I have severely neglected. I had the chance to try a Silky saw a couple weeks ago and it was awesome! I have a Fiskars bow saw that I use from time to time and it is decent. I really do need to look into some smaller saws for my kits.

Got this little beauty from Lee Valley Tools (Canada). The main tube is 24 inches long, and the whole unit weighs less than my Leatherman.
Very compact and easy to carry with my pack.
Cheers.

How much does the way weigh? My Leatherman weighs 8oz. Curious because I think I might order one.

I think the saw will help you to conserve energy and for car camping a longer, heavier saw can come in handy. But, for me anyways, while backpacking or in certain survival situations, I wouldn't go for larger pieces of wood, because it more than eliminates the energy saved by using the saw and using energy means replentishing with food, which may not always be available in abundance.
