Machete - practical?

I didn't know much about machetes .... Now, I'd never be without one. A good $10 Tramontina is nearly priceless in some situations and I use mine just about everyday here ....
Plus, I never leave the house without one under the seat of my truck. .... In that area between "food prep" and "cutting down big ass trees" the machete rules the roost with regards to versatility.

I also have a bush hook for loose vines.

I use a Kabar Kukri machete when working up in some parts of northern Canada. There are small pine trees everywhere and I find this little chopping machete works great. It chops like an axe and it's much lighter and easier to carry/use. I imagine it would also work on light brush and small trees/saplings in southern climates as well. I have also used it as a large fixed blade knife when camping to baton small kindling up for starting the fire.

So yes, the right kind of machete for what you plan on doing is an extremely useful tool in my opinion.
