machete recommendation? fortytwo\others?

A straight bladed standard Latin American pattern but nothing under 20-inches in blade length. Most of mine are 24-inchers and I do what you are decribing all summer long around our place. Just make sure you give them a nice, thin sharp edge.

if its just grass i like the imacasa sable pattern (on bottom). a good general purpose machete is the imacasa 'pata de cuche' (middle piece); itll cut grass as well as chop woody veg nicely.
the top one is a hansa 'aguila azul'. i like it fine but not as much as the middle one.
all three are 24-26 inch blades.

remmmm, I know you asked about a machete, but I have an identical situation each deer season preparing an area for my ground blind. I bring a 18 inch machete in case there are branches or saplings to remove, but I use one of these-

for waist - chest high grasses and weeds. I can clear a 10 X 10 area in a couple of minutes with little effort. It's light and the handle is short enough that it could be strapped to the outside of a pack, but I put everything else on my back (including the ground blind) and carry the cutter in my hand.

I have one of these as well. Works EXCELLENT, after i sharpened it up some more. Not pack friendly though. About $14.

Good choices, all of them. The Hansa will chop wood the best of the three.
