Machine mark on new Sebenza 21 -thoughts?

Dang it, I just cleaned mine few days ago, now I gotta reopen to see the mark..

Just deploy the blade and you can see it-
FWIW: I never take mine apart to clean-Flush with brake cleaner and blow it out with compressed air. 2 drops of what-ever oil I have in reach and GTG.

Yup-the cut is made from what will become the inside of the handle.
It's a non-issue--

Not looking at it as an issue, just trying to understand what you meant by "there would be the same mark on the other end also". Do you mean before they drill the hole. I don't get what your are getting at, but that's cool.

Yeah, it's almost definitely not a "stress relief" cut. I mean no offense, but I'm not even sure how that makes sense.

CRK customer service definitely told me there was variance in this.. Don't know how that can be.. Just reporting what I was told..

I don't believe either one of mine have this mark. Will admit it's been awhile since I've taken them apart, but I don't really remember as I think something like this would've stood out. Will check and see.

Hav'n a background as a tooling/fixture maker.
The hole I bet, is the first machine operation for all fixture location down the line.
That cut may or may not be intentional. Very well be cutter over travel.

I have a 2006 Sebenza Annual that has the same machine mark on the lock side.

& my Micarta, Rosewood, & plain Sebenza all have it as well.

Really, no biggie!!!

Interesting: tonight I noticed on the Exquisite Blade of Legends vid -part 2, around 29:10, the handles on the bench clearly show the mark.

All of my Sebenza (5 total) have this exact mark. It is because the slot for the lockbar is cut with a circular sawblade, not a waterjet (from what I have been told). The kerf of the saw, being round, has to overlap on one side. The only way they could prevent this is to use a much larger saw, but that doesn't work because the tail-end of the lockbar is closed. My guess is the blade plunges in at the pivot end, and then saws towards the butt-end of the slab while increases in depth (so where you see it. I.E. not covered by the pivot assembly and washers, there is no kerf mark). It is "the lesser of two evils".
I think kidcongo is correct about this. It certainly looks like the blade plunge cuts on the pivot end and moves toward the butt end of the handle. My Large 21 looks the same. Just tell yourself that it is there for a reason. Tell yourself that a small amount of lube will migrate along the slot and lubricate the lock face. Looking at a 25, and it does not show this mark. But I could see a small mark that makes me think the 25 is cut with a water jet. Maybe that was part of the redesign. And the 25 doesn't need much lube on the lock face because of the ceramic ball. Man, when I look at it that way the two knife designs are well thought out.

Imagine a machined part having machine marks.
In a perfect world, these would not exist...I guess you know the rest.
Yes, it is a "slitting saw" that cuts the lockbar. It does have to move from one end to the other. The drilled hole, if my guess is right, is twofold; It hides the ugly at the end or beginning of the slitting saw travel and it also removes a sharp internal corner., Stress riser.. Internal sharp corners can be bad juju.
The machine mark could well be on some and not on others. Likely, there is a tolerance to the thickness of the scales. One might be .001 too thick, another dead on. Now in the case of .001 too thick, you see the mark..anything under nominal thickness will likely not show up.

Here is my effort to clear up this whole issue. These "machining marks" are actually very precise. As I have mentioned, all of my Sebenza 21, have these exact marks. I cleaned all of the grease out of this so called "mark" and found it to be very precisely cut, with a very sharp edge, and a very consistent angle. This little "mark" is actually a thing of some beauty (to a knife guy).

Here ya all go......looks Chris Reeve perfect to me! This is the mark on one of my small 21s. I actually like my knife more now that I have seen how nice this mark is made. :D
