Greetings,
I made this leather stamp on my CNC mill last night. I think it turned out alright, since I am still learning machining and coding.

It is 1.2" long by 0.95" wide.

Thoughts.

Great job, that looks really good! What kind of steel did you use or is that aluminum?

Nice Job Dennis!

I once made a branding iron for a Harley Davidson display. No one wanted to try it instead of tattoos.

My initial thoughts were to use D2. Then I looked at all the Tandy stamps and noticed that they were cast Aluminum. So I wanted to make my design and make a couple samples in Aluminum first to see what the results were. But now I am not sure if I am going to use the D2 for my leather stamps and just use them for stamping blades....Hmmm, I need a blade stamp too!

Not to darned shabby, would you be willing to make them and sell them to others? If so I need to be sending you a p.m. :)

Gabe,
For the money, NICE. I sometimes wish it was a little bigger, but it does 90% of what I require. The nicest thing is that I purchased an enclosure with it!. I can not imagine having it without an enclosure. The biggest learning curve is learning a 3d drawing program, and of course the money for software and tooling 3x the cost of the machine. Overall, it is the best investment I have made. I can use it as a manual mill and also in CNC mode.

I have made some real nice guards too!

That's sweeeeeeet! You may have just opened up a whole new sideline for yorself as I am sure there is a market there for those stamps!!!!!!!

I've been using Solidworks/HSMWorks as my modelling and CAM solution. What do you use?

Here's an example of toolpaths I've generated:

Gabe,
Nice work. Thanks. I use simple Corel Draw X4 and then save as a DFX file. Simple and easy for 2d stuff. I need to dive into Solidworks now that I got my CAM program (meshcam) figured out.

Question: Do you profile your hollow grinds on the side and then flip the blade or grind it edge up?

Dennis

I mill the primary bevels on the side. I mill the first primary bevel before I profile the outline of the blade.

I have used a 12 mm ball mill and a 1" ball mill to mill the bevels with a .01" step-over (both worked fine).

I'm waiting on a Harvey Tool adjustable chamfer mill as I think it will do a better job on surface finish and have a larger step-over. I may also just get a custom fixed angle chamfer mill (or just bite the bullet and get a rotary table) to try out as a next step after that.

Here's a lay-out with a blade for a camp knife (and the piece of steel it's being machined from) and then the blade reversed. The toolpaths in this case are an initial roughing pass on the reverse side primary bevel.

The impression looks really good man. At least you remembered to reverse the image for the stamp (ask me how I know).

You guys need to do some WIPs. I'd enjoy seeing your approach to all this.

Dennis wow thats excellent how much to make me another one you can never have to many stamps . You can email me a price and include the shipping . kellyw

I'd like to get on your list too for a leather stamp and when you get the knife stamp sorted I'd likely want one of those too.

Thanks everyone for your comments and requests! It would be apparent that there is a need for tooling stamps and supporting a BF member is much appreciated. Today I will update my membership to 'Knifemaker' and try to put a price these stamps. Please send PM if you have any thoughts to a target price as selling these were never my intention.

Thanks for all your support guys!

Dennis
