hi everyone,

need some help deciding what to get. as mentioned in the title of this thread are the knives i'm considering. if anyone can shed some more light on these blades, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin McClung's ATAK2 is very much a fighter, with its very ergonoimc grip and balance, it is the knife of choice for many who go in harms way. Mad Dog Knives are second to none when it comes to fit and finish.

Check out www.tacticalforums.com (Mad Dog's forums) for a more balanced view than you are likely to see presented here.

Hi Pitty.

It really all depends. What uses do you want the knife for? The ATAK2 is by most all accounts an exceptional knife but it is a fighter, intended for one specific purpose that most everyone thankfully has no use for. The Fusion Steel Heart is just about the best you could ask for in an all around use knife. So like I said, it really all depends.

and jedi_pimp, I think you may have mistakenly substituted balanced for biased. I have yet to ever see an unbiased discussion of a makers blades on his personal site and especially not on the one you linked to in your post.

BUSSE!!!
Although you might not be able to order one now,
(I think custom ordering is closed)
the busse company store should get some in when they are finally released.
The fusion steel heart is an awesome, awesome knife.
AND TOUGHER TOO!!!

I'd go with the Busse...under extreme use conditions it will be much less likely to snap in two.

The ATAK is definitely a more purpose-built knife, so if you are going to buy a "fighting knife" and only expect it to excel in that capacity, then go for the Mad Dog. IMHO though, the Busse is a better deal, INFI spanks O1 in toughness and the warranty is BULLETPROOF. The Steel Heart is a more general utility blade but Jerry stands behind his knives 100%, he will replace it even if you were trying to break it.

You gotta be kidding me, right? I think it is a REAL stretch to say that tactical forums, which are run BY KEVIN MCCLUNG is somehow more balanced than these forums. I refuse to visit that site after I saw how unprofessionally Mr. McClung dealt with a warranty issue, in which he insulted his customers. In that episode I saw how a REAL "operator" works, by insulting a customer that tried to prove to themselves that Maddog knives deserve the mountains of hype that they seem to have. I also take issue with how he treats competitors, like Mick Strider and Duane Dyer (sp?), by insulting them and essentially calling their designs useless. All of this in a forum in which he dishonestly deletes posts and allows his buddies to gang up on his own customers. I am sorry but I don't care how good his product is I refuse to touch another Maddog thanks to his obnoxious and condescending attitude. I am not trying to start a flame war but I can't believe that a guy with his attitude is still in business.

Hey, no kidding.
If all MD has to offer is a good fighting knife design,
you might as well look elsewhere.
After all, his knives are mucho $$$$$$

Had 2 MDs, 1 was ATAK2, they were OK, but way over priced for the product. Got rid of them when it came to light that warrenties were guesswork.

Busses have the warrenty to cover just about anything.....same goes for swamprat if memory serves. Have had a dozen Busses, and feel they're better bang for the buck.

Good luck,

Thomas

thanks for the comments guys! when your putting in a bit of cash for a knife you want to get as much info as possible. i just love these forums................ :)

+1 Devilnut

while i can't speak for sure about busse, i know swamprat (a busse offshoot) does warranty EVERYTHING FOR LIFE OF THE KNIFE (not just original owner)---i would assume the same would go for busse.

Devilnut,
I would say that your comment is not necessarily true. The warranty is against unintentional damage. If you were trying to break it, the knife may no longer be under warranty. You are right though, Jerry stands behind all his knives 110%.

Less likely? Heck, I'd like to see how somebody was able to snap one, if it ever actually happens.

Well, Danbo, Cliff Stamp did break his Busse Basic 7, but I'm assuming you're talking about the FSH. :D

Pitty, in case this worries you, Cliff could figure out how to break a solid cube of titanium, so this doesn't reflect poorly on Busse knives. IIRC, he was banging his Basic 7 through a tree with a sledgehammer. His Basic 7 had already been abused for months (years?) and thinned down some, and it finally gave up the ghost.

"some" ?? Have you looked at the before and after pictures:eek: Cliff's basic 7 looked to have about half the mass gone from modifications and sharpening:D

Lukers,
I may not have been completely correct as to the actual wording of the warranty but that's what I got from "No Question Asked" and Jerry is not scared of his end-users duplicating the tests that he claims the knives can handle, so in that regard, I 'd say that he would guarantee against intentional breakage. Thanks for the heads up though. :D

Jerry has given the example of cutting through your knife with an oxy/acetylene torch, if you do it just to say you did, it's not covered. If it was an accident, then it is.

As far as warranties are concerned with the Wauseon Wonders , it's the knife that has the warranty not the purchaser  . This makes it a no brainer for me , especially when the knife is in the $300 and up range :) .

I hardly agree that the Mad Dog ATAK is "very much a fighter." It is truly a fine "combat" knife but I can think of many of Mad Dog's other knives I would want in my hand if it came to a pure knife fight.

Combat is made up of mostly utilitarian duties other than "sentry removal" or using your knife as a last ditch weapon when attacked by the hordes. The ergonomic handle only shows what a good comfortable handle can be on any knife, but does not put it in the "fighter" category.
