Mad Dog Knives Sterile ATAK....I Think.

I ran across this new knife today. I had no idea what it was when I bought it.

From what I can gather it's a unmarked (other than the letter prefixed three digit serial number etched on the knife and sheath) ATAK that was a over run from a SEAL contract.

All I've been able to find out was this listing from 2005:

https://www.arizonacustomknives.com/Sterile-SEAL-ATAK-C209-by-Mad-Dog-Knives.aspx

The plain pasteboard shipping box it was in has a UPS 1995 shipping date from AZ but no packing list.

It seems to be of very high quality. Real deal or just a knock off?

If it's the real deal what is the handle made of?

The mad dog atak has an early history of some fakes. Contact the maker if you need to be sure.

I did EM the company that sold the Sterile MD knife as they are a distributor and asked for contact info. That was over the weekend so I've not heard back yet.

Looks legit, the knock offs I have seen are off the current generation of that pattern. Best thing to do is contact Kevin, he would be your best source.

Perhaps my Google-foo is weak but I could not find any contact info, just the distributor. If you happen to know it could you post (or PM) me a link or phone number?

I'm not so much concerned about the value other than for tagging it so my estate don't sell it for a few bucks at a yard sale or something like that when I go take my dirt nap. ;)

I just what to make sure it's not just some Chi-Com knock-off before I tag it, wrap it, and consign it to the depths of my Foot Locker-O-Knives.

If it is an ATAK, it deserves to be used and used hard, not buried in a foot locker.

"Deserves" ain't got nothing to do with it. Besides it will be in the company of a lot of vintage fighting knives. ;)

LOL...Plus I don't have anything tacti-cool enough to go with it. I'd look like some kind of a poser with that thing strapped to my belt in the squirrel woods.

Check your PM.

poorly-molded kydex sheath, different choil on the blade, not enough curve on the handle butt, not enough swell on the middle part of the handle. different position for the lanyard hole.

Are you comparing this knife with the 1995 version? The same knife today has been refined quite a bit over the original model that the Navy purchased.

Like I said all I had to compare it with was the one in the link in the OP. Looks exactly the same to me with the exception of the numbers. The sheath and knife are etched C1xx so it would have been made even earlier if it's legit.

I don't think one of BDK's distributors would misrepresent their products like that as I understand the owner guards his product's reputation pretty stringently.

I'll try and call tomorrow.

Edit: I went ahead and tried the number I was given figuring I'd leave a message but it was disconnected. :(

Check your PM - updated contact info. :)

If it's a legit mad dog, handle is micarta. The part near the blade will have a different grain pattern. It's turned sideways to the rest of the handle .

Always thought they were micarta with opposing grain. Oh well - never owned one. Too damned expensive. When I spend that amount on toys, they go "bang".
