Mad Dog + Mission = Nexus

nice knife molletta.i'd like to make a knife using k360.
the nexus group are like arctic explorers?the handle of the knife looks like it was made for use with gloves.

Molletta,

Ciao! That is a great looking knife. Great pics too!

Is that a stick tang or a full tang wrapped by that handle?

Does anybody know what happened to Mad Dog Knives? I have an ATAK which I am very fond of but have heard nothing about them since about '98.

Still around, but this can be an ugly topic on this forum. You might try doing some searches to see the kind of drama that comes up when that name is mentioned. The archives have some very intersting threads. I'm not trying to cut your question off, but just let you know.

The blade is virtually indentical to a Mad Dog Voodoo Hound - one of my favorite blades, actually. How did you guys decide on a dull false edge for use as an expedition blade?

Generally speaking this sort of point/ edge confioguration will go a long way towards providing better penetration into meat and such, but I would assume for overall heavier tasks a blade with the full-height flat grind like an ATAK or MPK would be a more practical design. Were you looking to score a little weight reduction?

The handle needs to be finished, but 20-30 min with a palm sander would at least get rid of all those corners on it. It's been my my experience with knives for any purpose that if you leave all those angles and corners on the handle you've got plenty of surfaces which will but the hand constantly. However, it would not be a long process to clean that up and you'd have a pretty good working handle.

Dan, Mad Dog is very much alive and well, you could take a look over at www.tacticalforums.com which is a site he owns and maintains.

For a comparison, here's a pic of the Voodoo Hound, which has been in the Mad Dog lineup since mid-2000. It's built from 01 tool steel with a hardchrome finish and a G10 handle (It's not exactly G10 but close enough for conversation.)

On dull false edge con put on the second hand for help cutting strong material.
The false edge help in penetration also in strong material,

is also made for blade weight reduction, tickness of blade is 0.283 of inch.

The handle is confortable, in severe use not calluses at the hands.
I think that your is a good idea, 20-30 min with a palm sander makes a good finish.
I like Mad Dog , I have some of them.

Okay, thanks, I did not realize the false edge was dull. On this particular blade design I am actually used to a sharp edge, which would make it a lousy field knife, although with or without that sharp top edge it should be an excellent problem solver. The Voodoo Hound is one of the finest seven inch knives I have ever had the pleasure of using. That false edge sure does make penetration easier.

Calluses are fine with me, I just dislike the blisters along the way to the callus ;)

I do like the knife with the green handle - I've been hoping for years to talk Kevin into building me one with the green ghost jade green G10, but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Thanks for the clarification on the top edge.
