MAD DOG Update #5

I think EC summed it up right there. No one would take thier DULL knife on a survval or camping situation. They would sharpen it first. I know you want to keep it as close to "out of the box" as you can, but like a previous poster said; you only have the factory edge once.

Mike, I think the knives should be sharpened. These tests are supposed to show us what the knife is capable of. Not how good of a job the factory does at sharpening/packaging, etc.

If you opened the box and the knife was broken, you would not say "oh well, test it anyway because this shows how you could possible receive your knife." Instead you would get one that was a good example of the type in question. Just my oppinion. Thanks.

The knife should be sharpened. I agree with the general sentiments expressed here -- it makes little sense to test a knife that we know is dull and will perform badly; and furthermore, the factory edge is only there once, whereas "my" edge is forever.

On top of that, I think one of the most interesting parts of a knife review is the description of how the sharpening process went. Was it really difficult to sharpen? Was the burr difficult to grind off? Were the bevels really thick? All things I like to know.

The solution that will make more people happy is the one Cliff suggested, testing the knife twice, with factory edge and hand-honed edge. If you were to do just one, I'd go for hand-honed edge.

Whew. Time out. My reply was not directed at any one elses. I didn' t read every reply in full prior to posting. My mistake. So Paul, let' s all chill out. Besides I' ve added the appropriate smiley as intended originally. And yes, Mike T., as I, needs none to come to his/my rescue.

Nakano

Thanks Nakano, I was up really late when I wrote that as I've had insomnia for the last couple of nights. I was being somewhat facetious when I suggested the signed statements. I think what a lot of people are missing here is that this test would not be such a big deal if someone (bow wow) had not questioned Mike's integrity. I won't rehash all of that though. Mike has been asking for impartial witnesses since this whole thing blew up. If I had the money or time right now I would have gotten down to FL as soon as I could. I would really love to watch these tests. I just got a little heated when three people in a row decided they needed to sarcastically comment on what I had posted. I won't bring it up again, as I'd like this thread to get back on track.

Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

I think I will test the knife with the edge as received and then I will sharpen it and test it again. All this after throwing a football all afternoon today

I will also bring the other knives from the test and test them too as I will need them to help me remember my scoring system. This is why I like to test all the knives at once or over 2 days.

Excellent Mike, I would like to add that along with Joe I would be very interested in a detailed description of the sharpening process for each blade.

Sure Cliff,

On the MPK I plan to use the Sharpmaker 204. On the Mad Dog I will travel down I4 in Orlando at about 160MPH and I will hold the knife down to the pavement until sharp

OK Looks like we are on for Orlando with 2 ATAK's!

I will be on my way in the morning with Spark and our better halves.

Also taking the digital camera and some other stuff. I bought somemore Spruce as I really think pine is a wimp test. Got a bit of 1" Hemp rope and I will duplicate the classic carboard test.

The Mission I will be testing is a MPKS. For the record it's edge is not razor sharp either but it is better than the ATAK. I will test both knives as is and will use the 204 for bring the edge back. I just watched Sal's 204 video and it is very well done.

The problem is you guys will be wanting the results right away. Well you will have to wait for the premeir issue of the magazine to see the results.

Mike,
Where are you going to be testing the knives?
If I can get my car back from the boneheads at the dealers' service dept. tomorrow I would like to come see the test.

If a man says something in the woods and there are no women there to correct him, is he still wrong?

Outside Nam's condo in Kissimee.

Let me know if you can be there. We will test sometime between 10:30 and 12:00

The first part of the test is over. We (Nam and me) chopped 2x4's, cut carboard, a little hemp and tip tests.

The results will be in the new on-line magazine on January 1st.
