Mad Dog Vs. Busse

Smoke,

Thanks for the feed back. Both, knives look superficially very similar, and were designed for the same military evaluation, I though the handles might be close.

not2sharp - Actually I haven't held a Mission MPK.

Smoke - Thanks for jumpin' in there. I still need to email you - midterms are kicking my ass right now.

hopethisisnttaken:

I agree with the Mad Dog philosphy that a knife should break rather then bend

He should not differentially temper them then as this is one of the main reasons for doing so. The points on McClungs blades will bend readily as both Hilton Yam and Mike Turber and others have demonstrated. I have also put a bend in the full length of one of his larger blades, the TUSK.

Everything I have read has said that Busse steel is more prone to bending?

No, similar sized Busse blades are far stronger becuase of the uniform temper.

Before Busse Combat came out with the new "E" handles, McClung had a clear advantage in regards to the grip because of the drop and more ergonomic shape. However with the new Busse grips it seems to me that the only advantage that McClungs blades have is that the softer spine should allow heavy impacts, however that work will void the warrenty and thus it is not a functional advantage.

Anyway in short, the Busse will out cut and out last the Mad Dog. If you want strong competition for Busse Combat look in the custom area as there are many custom makers who will grind quality big blades in a similar price range (and even below it) Allen Blade for example.

Blilious,

Thanks for the info. It looks like we can either buy the original Maddog Atak, or the product improved MPK for less than 1/2 the price. Its the MPK for me.

I have the Mission MPK, MPKS, and Mad Dog ATAK2. I like the handles on the MPK's better than the ATAK2. It is less likely for the MPK's to slip due to the grooved and textured handle. This is certianly not a universal opion held by people who have handle my ATAK2 and MPK's. Quite a few prefered the ATAK2 handle.

I think it's great Mission is going to kydex instead of grillon which feel a bit bulky.

Will, what do you think of the MPU?

Jason, no problem you don't owe me anything. Midterms are kicking my butt too.
