Mad Dog vs. ???

I dont hate him either. I am sure he makes great knives, as long as you only cut with them. Some knives are made for cutting, some are made for strength, I realise this. But you shouldnt say your knife is built for strength when all it can do is cut. Mad Dog's are awesome knives, but not as good as McClung says they are. If I need a survival blade that can take my weight, I will go with a Swamp Rat, or Busse. If I have a load of cash to drop on the big fixed blade that can only slice stuff, then I might buy a MD, but I doubt it.

Mutt, I don't really care. I just think that those claims need to be supported with proof in order to be accepted. Otherwise it just leaves a bad impression.

I'm in no way affiliated with McClung and quite frankly: from what I read...I'm not his biggest fan - to say the least. I just don't want to believe rumors and jump to conclusions based on biased and/or unsupported "information".

Yes that is the same person, he personally brought this issue up himself on his own board on Knifeforums and on usenet. It was also used as part of the promotion for his knives. You can find the usenet threads as they are archived, most of the Knifeforums threads were deleted, but lots of people archived them.

No,that is Dork Genius,,I mean Kevin

What a retard

14 posts and youve still only bashed mcclung.

non bashing = talking about how his knives arent strong enough to support his claims about them

bashing = calling him a dork and a retard in order answer the question "are you sure thats him?"

The thing about those "is a dork" comments, is that they actually help McClung. Anytime you get attacks like this on a person they make them symphetic, I often wonder if those people are actually fans of his.

Here's a book by him claiming to be a 14 year old working for the CIA...
What was really amazing is that the book was never published(by his own admission) but yet his wife goes on Amazon and does a book review of it giving it glowing reviews.

These people are just twisted.

After reading the post by MelancholyMutt about his CIA woes I used the
search function over on Tactical Forums and found a old thread about "Dark Genius".This is what Kevin called himself in this "book".

The dork part came from a poster over there that nicked named him "dork genius"

big daddy, I don't know if you have told us this already, but what did Kevin do to you that has you so riled up? About the only time that you post here is when you have the opportunity to slam him, so I figure he must of done something really bad to you or someone close to you.

Nothing to me.He has been a real butthead to a lot of folks in the REAL tactical world.People that I respect. He has even called some of them thieves and liars.

From the Kirkus review of his book:

McClung was accepted by the Bay area's genius education program for ``Mentally Gifted Minors,'' whose special scientific projects were constantly sifted by the CIA for ideas

Lol, I was in that program. I must have been absent the day the CIA came in to check out the "complex electric rifles" we all built at age 4.

The same reason people go after Lynn Thompson for being a phat poser... cept one major thing... Lynn actually makes reasonable claims, proof videos and is a rather sane and personable individual...

Comparing CS to MD is like apples and oranges. As Parker stated, for the price, CS is a great buy. I personally would rate Swamprats higher (handled a few and own a Bandicoot) I can't comment about Kevin's sanity, but he's a nice enough leprechaun. :D

The thing about the Polish fiasco is the blade was a 3/16 Pygmy. COME-ON! Let's be reasonable. I have not tried chinning on my MDs, but I've chopped OLD, DRIED Kiawe (Mesquite???) logs, Axis deer pelvic and spine, goat ribs, etc, and MDs are by far SUPERIOR to CS SRK, Tantos, Recon-Scout and a few others I've used.

You want a cheap, well made, VERY tough knife.....I say "buy a Swamprat." I'd prefer a swamrat over many knives (custom or production) with a price-point similar (and even higher) to Mad Dog simply because of their toughness, etc. In fact, I'd feel well equipped with a Swamrat.
You want a finely made tool/weapon with an exceptional edge, then MDs are ONE of your choices. I own a beautiful (to me) Caffrey custom. It is exceptional in its own way, but if I gotta head to the hills tor survive or fight and gotta choose one knife, it's a Mad Dog that I'd want strapped to my ass because of their geometry, ergos and edge and toughness.
Kevin is incredible at what he does (he even makes some real art) he makes his knives the way he does for PRACTICAL reasons, not to appeal to the public's latest fad. His opinions/personality rub a lot of folks the wrong way and people use this as an excuse to attack his knives.
Let me put it this way, I'm 36 y.o. father in college, so I have a very limited budget. I choose to buy Mad Dog knives because I KNOW I can depend on them in the real world whether hunting, hiking or a military deployment. Likewise, if I need a beater, Swamprat gets my vote.

Everything that was done to that knife, I did and more to a Howling Rat, check the review. McClung has also attacked 52100 in the past as a not suitable knife steel. Yet his differentially tempered O1 is more brittle than full hard SR101.

McClung is also the same person who heavily critized folders like the AFCK made from ATS-34 as having brittle tips because they broke off when prying in woods. He used to talk about how often he had to repair these for SEALS and so on, and how his knives were not so fragile.

Don't promote it if your knives can't take it.
