Mad Dog

I didn't see any "slams". Many of us here are custom knife lovers and we appreciate hand ground, heat treated, sole authorship knives by full time makers made of exceptional steels. I have many fixed blade customs and I admire the knives and the knifemakers, and several of the purveyors too. Having said that, commenting that some of the Mad Dogs are expensive relative to other customs out there is not a "slam" or an unfair comment on the integrity or artistry of Kevin.
There are comparable customs out there at competitive prices, and that is the standard by which I made my comment. I am quite willing to pay a premium over a production knife, Busses included, to get a full custom. But when the price is in the ballpark of a custom Simonich, a Wally Hayes, a Lightfoot, a Hancock, a custom Simonich, etc , a comparison and a comment is more than fair.

Good ergonomics for the handle, though somewhat hand shape specific, towards the slick side security wise, has very impressive secondary features such as fire and shock resistance, very high abrasion and puncture resistance. Good blade profile for cutting ability. NIB sharpness is good. Only real drawback is that the steel is on the fragile side, even more so than stainless steel for the blade body. Very nice Kydex sheath work in regards to blade fit and overall finish and functionality. Warrenty under heavy use is nonexistant. Price is high considering the market.

PS

"!!!!YOU SHOULD GET BUSSE INSTEAD !!!!!"

(actually the Swamp Rat line would be a better direct replacement as it also has a full enclosed synthetic handle and a similar steel with a much better heat treatment, plus the military tip, much stronger/durable blade, better warrenty etc. )

People find them overpriced because they are lacking Micarta, carbon fiber, bright Satin finish, rubys, diamonds, pearls, fancy little designs on the blades and gold inlaying so MD knives just do not look right in their glass cases.

Mad Dog Knives were meant to be used. I bought mine to jump out of C-17s, fly around in Blackhawks, swim with it, go thru mud, banged up against hummvee doors, do PLFs on it, get caught on the damn camo netting.....not to mention cut what I want to cut. Problem is that my time in the military ended before I got my ATAK. You look at a Mad Dog knife for the first time and you wouldn't believe it was all handground.

both 'non-metallic' versions, but having handled probably 50+ other MDK's, including S. Harvey and S. Moore's knives, having had Tim Tang, aka 'Tickblade' visit our home with his big blades, having seen or held almost every version of MDK made to date includinmg the CSN knives, and having talked extensively with Kevein and Terrill in the past, I'll tell you this much...

When we finish these RMK/A-F/AMK collections here in the next few months, our 'knife dollars' are going into MDK's...because they rock!

Based on my personal handling, MDK's are the lightest, quickest, fastest, best fixed blades out there for the money...bar none!

Why don't they call them "Kevin's Knives" instead of "Mad Dog"? ;)
