you may have noticed alot of threads from me lately, i think i have three or four on the first few pages, but i am on spring break so i have had a good amount of time on my hands. so, the other day i was thumbing through the SAS survival guide and i saw a couple of diagrams of the fish basket. so, having alot of time on my hands, i figured i would give it a go. i wasnt really sure how it was going to turn out, as it involved a few skills that i had never practiced before, but i figured things out well enough to make a fishing basket. it isnt any prize for looks, but , well i think, it would be usable.

for those of you that havent seen or read about a fish basket, the basic idea is, the fish swim in, but dont understand how to get out. so, it is basically just a trap for fish. i think i remember DOC CANADA posting a picture of one that he made, and his was a much better example, but here is my take on it.

i made it of entirely of sticks and roots, no man-made materials were used. the main thing i learned about in this project is the versatility of roots. i used them to tie up everthing, and i also wound some up into wreath shapes to use as loops for the basic frame of the trap.

this is the only tool i used in the process, just a small puukko that my grandpa made.

anyway, thanks for looking,

Very cool Brenden! I dig that puuko as well!

Bet you can catch some crawdads with that as well!

I used to have a plastic version of that. Caught a lot of bait (mud suckers and crawfish) on the california delta in my childhood.

Do you have any plans on using it?

i have seen that you can make one out of a water bottle by cutting off the top portion and inverting it, that would obviosly be for smaller things though.

as far as using it, if i am ever near a creek or a lake with fish in it, i will definatly give it a shot. i have a creek in my backyard, but no fish live in it.

a nice trap for your first attempt. In the future think about the size of the fish you will most likely find and size the trap accordingly. That looks large enough for a good sized bass or trout. Nice pukko that wood handle is magic!

That's good stuff man, amazing how much you can learn after just one attempt at something. And of course that's a sweet friggin puukko.

very cool Brenden... that looks great man... i really like that little puuko...:)
