I had a newer, "Made in USA" head laying in a corner so I decided to make something nicer out of it. This is what it became today.

Any idea who made that head? I suspect Collins, but really don't know. It has a really good temper, and will take a great edge.

Nice job. What head weight did you end up with? I ask because in my Hudson Bay collection is a True Temper that is a 3 1/2 pound head. A head that big just seems too much and adds to the problems of the design.

Beautiful job head and handle. Guess you are stuck around home with the rain like we are here! Your design seems like it has a slightly longer eye like some of the HB improved designs. I'm curious about final head weight and handle length as well.

PS it took me a while, but I've gotten to where I can make a nice cut with the angle grinder also, though maybe not as nice as you did. Very handy tool!

Thanks, guys, and yes Tropical Bill played a roll in this axe!

After the initial cut the head weighed 2.63 lbs., and the stave the haft was made from was 22" in length before being trimmed a little for seasoning cracks. The elongated eye was not what I anticipated, but after cleaning up the cut, it ended up longer. If I ever make another, I will take that in to account. But, it was made on a whim yesterday without much thought input.
Here is a couple more pics.
