well i mixed up the damn stones on my sharp maker:confused::confused:
i cant tell the ultra fine apart from the fine stones...yea i know reall dumb and ive been kicking myself for it. yes the red ink has worn off of the ultra fines. Any tips or tricks so i can bail myself out of this mess. or maybe its just time to move on to a better sharpening system:D

I can feel a bit of a difference betweeen the two if I drag a fingernail along the corners of the stones. The ultra fines also seem to have a bit more of a "shine" to them when compared to the fines under a halogen lamp.

Hope this helps.

ok i think i got the right ones.. i was able to feel what ones were the smoothest out of the 4 so those were the ultra fines. These stones also reflected a bit of light were as the fines absorbed it. well that sucked. hope this helps any other idiots like me

To keep from making the same mistake use some nail polish and just make a small mark on the ultra fine stones on the top of the stones.

I was going to weigh mine and see if there was a difference, but I don't have a scale for something that light.

I've had to refresh the red tops a couple of times on mine. I use some of my wife's craft paint. It works pretty well even during washings.

ok, now that i sorted that mess out. I want to buy a strop. Ive gotten these knives as sharp as i can with my current set up. I think a strop is the next route. Ive read plenty on them and i think a lee valley one(the two sided with the compound) http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=32999&cat=1,43072 may be a good place to start

my only question is where the sharpmaker stones grits are in relation to this chart??
