Just got the knife today and it looks real sharp. The item # is 110078806631. Not sure if I paid too much but I sure do like the knife. It's real clean and not bad for my first investment into this Schrade thing. How did I do for the price I paid?

Welcome. If you don't mind me asking, what prompted you to start "investing" in Schrade knives?

I wish I could give you my opinion on your latest purchase, but I can't find anything on eBay without a link. I am sure that it is possible to search for something by the item number on eBay, but I don't know how.

I decided to get into it because I've always liked knives, have a ton of different knives and I've always liked knives made in the USA. Not knocking those made off-shore but I like those made in USA. I also collect Utica knives because I was born in Utica. Simply copy the item number and when you go to the ebay home page paste it into the search engine. It will pull the item right up for you.

Nice clean looking knife, last year, you would be paying about that much, in box with papers, the way things are going on e-bay, prices are rising steadily
and knives without boxes and papers are going higher than ever, So I think you did not do too bad

kevins73cigars, if you put the item number in the search box it will take you right to the item you are looking for, just as you would if you were searching for, "Schrade" as an example.

Great Pro Trapper to start your collection with. Robert Clemente states the 285UH first appeared in 1969 catalog right thru to 2002 so very popular style. The Old Timer Equivalent is the 94OT so that would be a great one to follow up your collection with.In 1970 the name Pro-Trappers was assigned and in 1979 Pro-Trapper and in 1983 they dropped the hyphen. Last price in 2002 was $34.95 so you did O.K.
Another tip when buying on Ebay try and bid on U.S. Sellers who wont sell to us blokes overseas it reduces their market considerably and they invariably dont achieve anything like they would if us hungry Schrade buyers got a look in.! Hoo Roo from Downunder.

Thanks for the posts guys. As a newbie, I figure I'll pay an idiot tax until I figure things out a bit. I'm trying to find the Levine 4th edition to use as a guide but I'll be danged if I can find one for less than $95. I figure that's a couple of decent knives right there. And Larry, I just heard where one of your countrymen just beat up a shark with his head inside the great white...sweet fancy moses, I like you boys down under!

D&B, The 285UH is a nice knife. I've bought and sold a few, although I consider myself a newbie too. The most important thing to do is buy what appeals to you and have fun with it...

One word of advice on collecting Schrade - don't do it! Save yourself! Get out while you still can, it's a sickness, an addiction. Run for your life!

Kevin,
Thanks for the advice:) . But, since I've given up gambling, booze and wild women, I find I do have a little money left over.....not much but a little.

Ducks and Bucks White Pointers dont really want to eat us they generally spit us out after they find out we're not a seal but they are not all that gentle during the spit!!
Why dont you buy Robert Clemente's book on Schrades complete with CD with photos of all the knives mentioned. Still the most authoritative of all the Schrade books apart from Codgers soon to be released "The Schrade Book of Schrades for Schrade Schradeoholics'Schradecyclopedia".....Hoo Roo
P.S. I cut out gambling booze and wild women and it was the worst hour of my life...now I'm cutting out paper dolls......

D&B..
You havent given up enough yet..
As Kevin states its addictive. Schradeaholics, Lost Souls...
Welcome to the club. Enjoy em while you can.

I have lots of Schrades I dont need to buy anymore, only way not to buy is not to look, this works well. Of course I suspect some here like the addiction feeling. It only becomes a problem when you know you have enough and you want to stop but you find you cant easily.

G'Day Tim, I have 400 to 500 mostly Mint Schrades...knives that can never be duplicated even if Taylor starts the USA build repos in earnest.
A lot with very low mintages and from Factory closure.I regard it at a priviledge to not only own them but have them here in Australia if we ever get really enthusiastic about Schrade collecting here in Oz. Between us both we could propably put together a pretty unique display. My point is because the timing was right with most of my purchases they will return on my investment but at this stage every time I learn something new I can go and look at the real article in my collection and appreciate it even more.

SNIPERS: I notice Codger had not just 1 in the final 10 seconds but 3 that put in a withering burst in the final seconds and none would have known where they stood when the dust settled except Codger who wasnt engaging in the BS.
Anyone that bids on Ebay would now know its become the norm rather than the exception. For an example of how I deal with them and just left one to rethink the practice Ebay#190074227328. This Schrade was on $33 odd with 20 seconds to go and mine was the only bid the Clown comes in with the perhaps $100 clearing bid and just paid a very high and unrealistic US$78 =Au$100 because of my Koala Bear trap.I would love to have seen the size of his eyes when it comes up simultaneously at end of auction he raised himself another $44! He will no doubt think the next time he places the high clearing bid particularly if tail gunning my derriere.
I have nothing personally against the sniper my point in highlighting a change in bidding practice is required to give yourself a measure of control in the final auction close. Seller would be ecstatic with his result not so the buyer. Hoo Roo I wont raise this issue again my point is made.

Larry
The last purchase of a Schrade knife I made on US ebay was with 1 second remaining on it I still won it for about $100 US dollars its true value is around $175 US plus, I really doupt Ill ever get $175 for it here in Australia even in 20 years, but who knows???
Regards Tim

Tim, I now have a number of Aussies who email me with Schrade questions prior to bidding on Ebay so their are more Aussies out there collecting better material if its available who dont really know how to go about bidding on U.S. Ebay which is why Oz prices are higher than U.S.They have worked out I,m a Schrade collector and Knowledge at least allows you to make informed decisions even if my knowledge base is still in its infancy as far as you blokes are concerned.
P.S. Are you the Tim De.. who emailed me before last Xmas? Hoo Roo

OK, in what will undoubtedly not be my last stupid question on this forum: What in the krikey does hoo roo mean? Is it australian for cussing? Sorry to sound so stupid but for the life of me, I have no clue. Thanks, mates.

Larry,
If you're referring to the 165, I was the winner on that one and placed my bid with 5 seconds left after making damned sure Codger wasn't coming in with counter bid. If he had and I'd won I would have gladly offered the knife to him for my purchase price, and that offer stands even now.I put a max of $75 on my bid, because that's what I was willing to pay for it regardless, and I wasn't about to give it up to two unknown individuals. I don't see any reason in needlessly trying to be the high bidder on an item with days to go on the auction. The tit-for-tat bidding needlessly drives the price up higher than any sniping would, and still invites snipers at the end. No matter how it's done, whoever has the strongest desire to own a particular knife will get it regardless of the bidding practices, so stop harping on it and go on to the next one. Those grand dads come up on a daily basis so if you loose one just wait for the next one, it might even be in better shape.

I wanted the 165, but not as bad as Eric. And I am glad to see him get it. I hope he will give us a good picture of it when it arrives. If I had wanted it more, and had more money to bid, It would be on it's way to me, I promise. As it was, I was relieved that I didn't win it.

Michael

Yeh thats me Larry, you probably have bigger budget than me, I purchased more than i planned to when i started and Im happy with what i have. Just because I dont buy anymore (or any at all for that matter) doesnt mean i cant be a Schrade enthusiast, Ill be around on the forum for a lot longer yet. Would have joined a year ago tried to about 5 times but never worked for some reason.
Have a Good One!!!
Regards Tim

Welcome Tim!!
Codger, thanks, I've never seen a 165 box set like that, I'll post pics as soon as they arrive. I know what you mean about the cash flow situation. The construction biz has slowed way down this winter, I think I'm beyond max'd out. Think I'll just cool it for a while and get the knives I have in some kind of order. I have a heck of a time looking for specific knives. Seems I have to wade through about every one I own before I find the one I'm looking for.
Eric

ea42, I sometimes think that I should cool it for a while also, especially after many purchases, over a short time period, do you think maybe, we might be kidding ourselves, there always seems to be the " only one more " voice which never seems to go away, good luck with your 165 purchase.
