Guys a bit of help please. Can you tell me what knives are made in Japan for foreign brands like Fallkniven? And/or What what models are made for a particular company that usually makes them in house.

TIA

Have you got a few days and a couple of hundred sheets of paper to print it all out? :)

Yup I have 2 High capacity HP printers raring to go! :D

Ack! Really? Are there that many combinations?

How about if I narrow it down some?

Cold Steel
Spyderco
Benchmade
Gerber

The reason I am asking is this. I am shortly to become a dealer here in Japan and I found out that if I import a knife that was made here (Like the Fallkniven) then there is no tax whatsoever.

Any help warmly recieved

Well, companies like Spyderco, Cold Steel and others have knives made in Japan as well as Taiwan, and the USA.

As far as a few examples? Right off the top of my head:

Spyderco: Endura, Delica, Police model, Ladybug, Merlin among others
Cold Steel: Voyager series, Vaquero series, Ultimate Hunter, Scimitar.
Al Mar: SERE, Shrike, Nomad, SLB, Eagle.
Beretta: Airlights, Tasca, Model 92 folder, Cheetah folder.
Browning: Barracuda series, Ice Storm series, Signature series, etc..
Fallkniven: P1 folder, etc..
Kershaw: Splinter, Seagal folder, Liner Action among others.
Kabar: Thorn, Warthog folder.
Emerson: Hard Wear Series
Lone Wolf: Tighe Pan folder (now discontinued, I believe.)

I'm pretty sure the Red series for Benchmade are made in that region, just not sure exactly what area. Japan, Taiwan, etc. unsure.

Spyderco, I think, you can tell a bit by the steels used...VG-10 mebbe japan, CPM stuff stateside (or i could be just making it up for giggles). I know my Para-military says "golden, colorado, usa, earth" so i think its stateside!! hehe

Benchmade's Red Class knives are made in Taiwan. Benchmade doesn't have any knives made for them in Japan that I'm aware of.

That's great. I wish you the best.

Besides some Spyderco and all Fallkniven, I think the Cold Steel AUS knives are Japanese manufacture. Kershaw is a subsidiary of Kai Cutlery, which is Japanese. Of course, Seki-Cut is Japanese.

Can you avoid importing altogether maybe, by working with these companies' reps in Japan to take delivery from their factories?

Hey all,

When Benchmade was Pacific Cutlery (Les DeAsis's) they were having most if not all the knives made in Japan. I think it was G. Sekai. Anyway, long story short, Les got burned, I think what happened was that the knives were either not being made to specs, or the delivery times were real slow, or that the price magically kept moving up as the projects moved forward.
Les is no dumbass, so he won't be repeating that lesson.

Esav, Thanks! There have been and will, I'm sure, be some more sleepless nights :D

Believe me its cheaper to buy and ship them here than deal with the locals. The tax is pretty reasonable anyway (3.7%) but anything that slips past legitimately is great.

Benchmades are in high demand and finding a place that offers them for less than MRP is tough. I spent the morning visiting as many online stores here that sell and advertise in the knife mag and I can beat them all hands down on price, so I am willing to give it a go. I have also bought a considerable number of blades from the Makers section. I can tell you straight up, US made custom knives are HEAD AND SHOULDERS above 99.9999999999% of the stuff I have seen here and about 30% of the price AND better materials!

As I will be working out of my house I have pretty much no overhead and getting by each month is pretty cheap. I got laid off about 4 months ago and it was S**t or get off the pot time :D

Couldn't tell you about the other brands, but Spyderco's easy. Just check the steel type:

Made in Japan:
VG10
AUS series (except the Salsa)
ATS-55

Made in the USA:
440 Series
S30V
440V

I think that covers all of 'em except the kitchen cutlery (whick I _think_ is all made in Japan, but I'm not sure)
