Madison Barlow.....questions

I would be very interested to hear your thoughts about the Northwoods Madison after you receive it.

Definitely. Say, as far as the custom sheath for this thing, Im guessing the sheath forum then? I wouldn't mind seeing what options there are for a traditional knife like this that you guys use.....didn't really see any threads on pocket sheaths for these anywhere.

I will be sure to post a small review on it or at least my thoughts about it when i get it. Thanks!

Did you check out the leather pocket slip option from where you bought the knife? My Madison fits it perfect, I had it shipped with the knife.

I would suggest you speak to Derrick while your order is still in progress about a pocket slip. i have the large pocket slip/sleeve. I don't think you need to go custom.

Ok cool. I'll be picking up a pocket slip from Derrick in a couple days. With my new toys and all, funds unfortunately ran a bit low this week. I will have to be careful until then, or may just whip up something myself. But, will be ordering that one soon, and will probably use the one it comes in for now.

The mainstreet pocketslip fits the knife beautifully and feels like less of a mass in the pocket than the large pocketslip. It is thinner, and just disappears in my pocket.

I'd take Derrick's advice here and try one of the KSF sheaths first. I have one and really like it, terrific quality.

Okay, just got the Madison. I love this thing, and will be doing a small review shortly, if anyone is interested. But, I had a couple questions with this knife.

Now, about right in the middle of the length of the blade on the edge, the knife is getting a good dent due to hitting the back spring when closing. When I look at the kick, it seems almost barely extrudes past the cutting edge, if any. And that causes the edge to hit the middle of the back spring in the raised section inside, and causing the dent. Its as if the kick needs to be a bit larger. I imagine sharpening it over time will get rid of this, but i don't really want to start removing steel so much already. I hope Im explaining this right. Is there anything I can do?

Second, on the bolster, you can faintly see the pin for the pivot coming through. Its as if the pin and the bolster need to be just a small bit blended together better. I was thinking maybe polishing the bolster will blend it, but I don't want to hurt the knife at all, as its expensive, and I don't really have the tools to do a perfect job, unless I can get by with rubbing it with some metal polish or something like that, but I don't know if that will work. Again, anything I can do for this?

I really love this knife, and hate to return it. Any advice guys?

thanks again, I appreciate any help.

dave

Dave there were a few others experiencing the blade hitting the back spring. Not sure how that panned out. I'm sure Derrick and/or GEC can help.

Any pics of that beauty?

It never fails when folks talk up a particular knife and one that many would consider expensive, you finally buy it and there is some issue. I feel for you. Derrick will take care of you, but it IS a shame you have to be taken care of at all.

That happened to me with the 2012 Trad forum knife as far as an issue is concerned. The knife was great, but the one blade was very dull and that bothered me. After much himhawing , I just sharpened it myself and took care of the isse. But there should not have been an issue to begin with in my opinion.

My first GEC knife was an absolute nail breaker. I kept an open mind and bought another and it was great. Have been pleased since.

Yea, its a bit frustrating....I know Derrick is a great guy, and already offered me the options of a repair or exchange.

The blade is just barely hitting, you have to really see in the light some angles to see the nick, so it can't be that bad.
But, the point of the edge is very close to sticking out of the handle when closed, so I don't know is "Stretching" the kick" will work, but i read some guys have done it with success. Also, I am dying to sharpen this thing to see if it fixes it, but I'm on the fence about it since its only 2 days old.

As far as the pin showing, its hard to see unless you know its there, so maybe I could just polish it out by hand?

The knife, other than that, is so well put together its almost like a custom. Just beautiful fit/finish, other than the blade thing. I may ask if the blade can be replaced, but I don't know how hard that is to do on a slip joint, and I hope I get it back the same way, perfectly centered blade...

yea, I'm frustrated. But, its not Derricks fault, I seem to have this luck with any knife I buy that I love too much! Plus, all the knives on the site seem to have an almost too small kick on the blade, so I really don't know....

......sigh

edit: just talked to GEC, talked to a real nice guy named Bill. He said turnaround is about 2 weeks, so not great but could be a lot worse. So, I think I will send her in for a quick fix.
Also talked on the phone with Derrick, and I confirmed that he is the great guy that everyone says. So great to see guys who commission these knives have such a passion and love for them, same as the consumers and knife nuts out there, which I can't tell you, is such a nice thing to see.
I will keep you guys updated. Thanks for your help guys

Great and timely thread. I'm also looking at the blue camel bone Madison.

I look forward to hearing your experience.
