Mag starter or ferro rod?

Ive lit hundreds of fires with ferro rods even in less than ideal conditions, i have not been nearly as successful with mag bars. This is largely due to the huge diggerences in quality in the available mag bars, i made the mistake of trying one from harbor freight and big surprise, it didn't work so well. If i come across a nice Doan id be willing to give it another shot, but i do not anticipate making the transition
 
The Doan Mag blocks are pretty good. If it doesn't say Doan don't trust it.
The ferro on the Doan makes nice sparks with little force.

I only just found one of my old Doan mag blocks and was pretty surprised how well it worked. I may rethink the mag block if I can pick up a few real ones.
Meanwhile I still use the Light my Fire ferro rods and they are very reliable.
 
I've only ever used a ferro rod. I do own a mag block , but it's somewhere in my storage unit . Where as my lmf army model firesteel lives in my edc pack
