I WOULD LIKE TO GET A KNIFE RELATED MAGAZINE. BLADE MAGAZINE OR TACTICAL KNIVES LOOK GOOD BUT HAVE NEVER READ EITHER. ANY OPINIONS ON WHICH WOULD BE BETTER? THANKS.

Just reading the posts at BladeForums and KnifeForums will teach you more about knives than any amount of those knife-company-sponsored magazines. Having said that, I occasionally buy them to look at the pretty pictures (then I kick myself in the butt for spending $6 that otherwise could have gone towards my next knife).

I buy Tactical Knives, since I primarily buy... tactical knives. :)

There are , at present, four knife mags.....

Tactical knives .....a good mag for most everyone
that doesn't bury you in advertizment.

Blade....to little story content and way to much
ad content. An overpriced rip off.....

Knives Illistrated.... a better mag now that Bud
lang isn't the editor anymore. Still needs work
tho.

Knifeworld....a friendly knife mag in newspaper
format. If you enjoy slipjoints or older knives
this is a nice mag.:)

So far I've dropped Blade first then KI & maybe
KW as money is getting tight. But Tactical knives

NEVER!!:D :D

I read them all and all but one (Tactical Knives) is like reading about how to make pottery.

My two favorites are Blade and Knife World. I am in opposition as far as most of the posters so far. I consider Tactical Knives to be the most over priced rag in the industry. It has little information that I find interesting and believe me, it is no less controlled by adveretisers than any of the others. The guy that runs TK is notorious for kissing advertisers butts. As far as I am concerned he lives up to his last name perfectly.

This is only my opinion of course.

Yeah, I get annoyed by all the ass-kissing that goes on in these magazines.

Typical summary at the end of an article about knife X:

"In all of our tests, X proved to be an excellent performer. The handsome looks, the rugged materials, and the high level of fit and finish combine to make one great knife for every day carry. Bravo, (insert manufacturer of knife X)."

But I swear I just read the magazine for the pictures, not the articles. :)

I recently went in to pick up the latest TK, and the price jumped from $6.99CDN (which is already on the high end) to $8.99CDN this month!!! i've NEVER seen a regular sized regular edition North American Magazine that expensive :barf:

At least Blade actually binds their Magazines instead of using cheap-o staples.

I've had subscriptions to all the magazines listed above, and have found shortcomings with them all over the years...

But, now there is a new knife magazine for us to read and learn from, the 'new kid in town', the new Knifeforums magazine... http://www.knifeforums.com/subscriptionspage.html

It's only had two issues so far, with the 3rd going to print next week, but it's looking good so far. All the good, little of the bad...

Mel

p.s. I think 1st issues can still be had too...

I actually think that Knifeforums the Magazine is pretty good. There is plenty of room for improvement, but it does have one big plus going for it so far. It's editorial policy is not under the control of the avertising department.

Now a little bit more on knifemakers and knifemaking, better quality paper stock and more pages filled with quality knife articles and we could have a real winner here.

I live in Atlanta there's a Tower of Records here and they carry every magazine on every subject. They have alot of international mags and my favorite is KNIFE. It's in japanese so I can't read a word but it's evident that the japanese have a powerful respect for bladed instruments. They have the best pictorials.

Once they had a spread about Strider Knives, it was truly amazing, there were dozens of guys in fatigues hacking into an old fighter plane. These guys were ripping huge wholes in the fusilage, a true illustration of these knives' capabilities. There articles on Lasi Szabo and Warren Thomas were equally as impressive.

The mag is 18 bucks, so I don't buy it, but it is by far the best knife magazine in the world. A lot of the knives and makers they showcase can be seen at:

I usually read them all just because I'd rather read about knives than anything else. While I wholeheartedly agree that TK is way overpriced Blade is the worst when it comes to being politically correct and some of the time the editor there sounds like one of the sheeple. And I can never forget how Krause shafted ken Warner and Bernard Levine and screwed up the Knives annuals and the Book of Knife values.
KI isnt too bad though they screwed Bud Lang. I'm sure Voyles had nothing to do with that and I enjoy his writing even more now than when he was the owner of Blade.
Oh yeah, my favorite knife writer now outside of Dex is the infamous Mr. Purvis:D

Thanks for the info. No caps used this time also!(I'm learning computers and knives at the same rate!)

My knife magazine reading has dropped substantially since the last bookstore moved from my area. I now have to travel almost an hour to find a decent newsstand. And to tell you the truth, the mainstream magazines are just too obviously biased for me to think about subscribing. I’ve found articles in each magazine that I have enjoyed reading, but the interesting ones are few and far between. Of all of them, I’d have to say that Tactical Knives comes closest to my particular interests, but that may change now that Jeff Randall has moved on.

Knifeforums – the Magazine is off to a good start. The layout and variety of content needs some tweaking, but things look great for a magazine still in its infancy. The reviews are heartfelt and honest. It has that grassroots kind of endearing quality to it.

Same as Art.
I have the most respect for Knife World. I get more usuable information from them by far on all types of knives.

Blade is my second favorite.

My favorite writers are B.R. Hughes, Dex, Bud Lang, Bernard Levin and Bruce Voyles. (gotta check this Purvis fellows stuff out ;)).

These days I keep up my subscription to KnifeWorld and let the others go. The forums are head and shoulders above any of them. Both Bladeforums and KnifeForums have a "picture" section too. I do like to watch e-bay for bundles of old knife magazines, they usually go dirt cheap and the knives and information is just as good as the day they came out. Also, I'm a latecomer to knife collecting and I find it enjoyable to be able to go through the old magazines and learn new things.

I've got a subscription to Blade, and am considering Tactical Knives also. I think TK has gotten frickin' ridiculous with the price of their mag, and am still peeved about what Steven DICK did to Jeff Randall. Having said that, I usually get something/several things good out of it. I particularly enjoy Jerry VanCook's articles. I actually bought a knife on his recommendations, once I checked it out first of course. That knife is the Spyderco Massad Ayoob plain edge. Heck of a knife I tell ya.
I really haven't had much experience with the other mags, most of them can be pretty hard to find around me.
