Magazines

"Knives Illistrated.... a better mag now that Bud
lang isn't the editor anymore. Still needs work
tho."

Knives Illustrated has never been the same after Bud Lang left. He WAS knives Illustrated.

Being a total knife nut, I will buy and read anything that contains pics and articles on knives. I subscribe to Blade and Knives Illustrated, and soon to be Tactical Knives. I figure that if I didnt subscribe, I would end up buying them off the rack. This way, at least I save some money by subscribing for 3 years at a time.

Danbo,
email me your address. I'm a gonna send you a bunch of Knife-Worlds.
You will be subscribing soon.

Just my opinion, but I gotta agree KI has taken a down-hill turn since Bud left.

My advice is to keep reading threads of interest here in BFC, and by all means read all of the mags if you can find them.

Like any other set of magazines, (cars, firearms, the entertainment industry), take everything you read with a grain of salt. There is the constant criticism that magazine writers go easy on big manufacturers because of advertisement dollars. A vaild point. In all magazines, when the test mule craps, the writer will add, "This seems to be an attypical situation, not indicative of their usually fine products."

Hardware doesn't make you better looking, a greater lover or a death dealing secret agent. Jerry Vancook is probably deadly with a wash-basket full of soiled linen, you are not. Read 'Soldiers of Fiction' and TK for their entertainment value, but always watch for valuable tips.

Collecting jackknives is a great hobby, you'll never learn it all. BTW, I don't buy any magazines; there is a Border's and a Barnes and Noble near my house. The magazine guys have to eat, and if an issue strikes my fancy, I put my money where my mouth is. Recently, I have enjoyed the history of James and Rezin Bowie and the probable genosis of the Bowie knife.

I have to agree KI went downhill after they screwed over Bud Lang.
That said, it is improving and I think Bruce Voyles is better now than when he owned Blade. Back then he seemed to just want to talk about his own interests,i.e. old pocketknives and old bowies, he seems to be able to cover a broader spectrum now. Also his outlook and writing style is better since his editorial about how he found out who his friends really were after he could no longer help them.

All my own opinion...they are ALL crap. Since I started haunting the Forums my knife knowledge has increased at least a quadrillion percent. This is real...the magazines are ad fantasy land.

Whenever you feel like buying one of those rags, just send the money to me and I will keep it safe for you until you have enough to buy a Bose or a Dozier ;)

I read them all, and write off the the subscriptions at the end of the year.(I have a knife related side business, it helps when I go to shows, I can write that off too)

I can only get Blade Magazine, Tactical Knives, and Knives Illustrated in my area and I will occasionally read them all depending on which ever issue is most appealing to me, but here's my take on them.

Blade: Good magazine, but far too many ads and not enough "real use" articles. Everything seems to be geared towards the latest trends. It's the COSMO magazine of the knife industry.

Knives Illustrated: Nice photographs, not enough solid articles and too artsy. If you want to drool over photos of knives the average working class guy cannot afford, this is the one for you.

Tactical Knives: Informative articles and great knife reviews from people who will actually go out and use knives. Too bad it's not published monthly.
