Magic Blades ?

I think they are beautifull, but for 3800 I could buy one heck of a firearm.

You have to pay for the best, and he modestly claims to be three times as good as any other master smith.

They are doing a number on him over in the Pirates Cove forum. See the "The next big-blowup" thread. The remarks are not too flattering. But of course it is the Pirates Cove after all. :)

They cut a lot of rope - admirable. But, how many beer cans will they cut?

In all seriousness, they look very nice. My concern is the price. I have no doubts that they're made well, but I have serious doubts that they're made that well; for that amount of money, it had better be a lightsaber. (Not speaking figuratively - it had better really be a lightsaber.)

Perhaps I'm missing the point.

If these knives are what people claim them to be, they might be worth the money to the lucky few, but what's "Samurai steel"?:(

On another note;
this Master(?)Shiva Ki's ego is terrible.
Even if he lives up to his claims, he's not very enlightened in my book...

These may be good knives, though they cost more than many very good Katana from blade makers in the USA and Japan. And a ten inch rope bundle is impressive, though to paraphrase Bruce Lee, "...rope don't hit back!"

However, I might take it more seriously if the symbol at the top of his Website weren't Ed Browns favorite (you know, Soldier of Fortune Magazine), the supposed International Mercernary Emblem.

Nice...but given a fancy wrap and one of Dan's personal sharpenings (no matter the magic he taught me about sharpening, he is still the Master of sharpening and I can *still* learn a whole lot more from him)...I'd match my Rose against it.

Dan showed the bunch of us at last years MWKK that there is a technique for rope...of course, ours were free hanging...not all taped together nice and sturdy like.

They all went *snick* with no more than a flick of the wrist.

I'd say it'd be a fun test...Dan, what'cha think?

The point about rope going 'snik' isn't that a HI blade couldn't do these things too, it is how close is the HI blade? For when you buy high end, you are paying exponentially for increasingly small improvements.

I don't know enough about the high end like you guys do, but it seems to me for under a 1000 you could find a blade as good or better than those.

I saw on TV someone made a chess set costing many millions of dollars. In the end, it still just played Chess.

Most importantly to me, for 3800 bucks, I'm more than half way to a Barrett Semi Auto 50 Cal., and probably have the single shot.

The guy IS a little full of himself.

The designs actually don't grab me...

I WOULD like to handle one in person & decide for myself.

But the cost... some things you just can't justify. Like munk said, a .50 Barrett if I had the money to burn. Once I told myself I needed a .50 for a boat gun (anti-pirate defense). If you can afford a boat, you can afford a .50, ran my logic. In the end I bought a 20" AK and strapped it to the back of the capt's seat.

Just as good? Yeah.

There aren't any pirates anyways, one should have a 20" AK before you pass, and besides, think of the money I saved...

I was hoping to get one of those flat boats they use for flyfishing. I dont know how much they are, but they are supposed to be low to the water and quiet. Man, that would be sweet...

my thoughts were summed up neatly in this thread in ShopTalk:

Obviously, knifemakers are passionate about their knives and the craft as a whole...it's never fun when someone claims to "be the best" whether they are or are not.

I actually like some of his designs, and his hook-type guard is something I definitely want to look into, study, etc.

There's something to be learned here about the power of marketing....for good and for bad.

Nasty - thanks for the kind words. The Rose would indeed be an excellent match. Especially with a full convex grind - the only way to go in rope-cutting, imho. Why not give it a shot? Sisal rope is cheap....I bet you could do three one-inch ropes taped together with no sweat....probably more....

"snik"......love it.....great description.

FWIW...I took a 15" AK to a hammer-in once and it went "snik" too...right out of the box....two one-inch ropes...no problem. The blade angle is ideal for rope-cutting.

Hence the sickle to cut grass.

This guy has taken the Cold Steel approach to it's logical extreme. It can't be a tool or a weapon he's selling. It's an idea or an image.

I followed the links. He seems to be a Ninja Master as well.

My money is still on Danny, because he knows how to totally flip out and kill people. Plus he hates pirates.
Seriously, i don't care how good your blades are or how many lengths of rope they can slice through. if you're a pompous jerk, then i really don't want your knife. That's my beef with Cold Steel. I know they make a good product for the money. i know that they can take a good amount of abuse. i just hate having BS crammed down my throat.

Why am I not surprised you're an expert on such matters?

In the hospital, whenever there was a olfactory disaster, from a bowel or wound on a patient, the staff would light up cigarettes as 'the only thing that'll cut the smell." They were right. I doubt they would be allowed to do that today, no smoking regs being stringently enforced.

My son ate in a retiree frequented Restaurant in Bozeman. The darn city is getting so expensive the old cowboys can't eat there? And this place, JB or something....was so bad neither my 6 year old or myself could eat- and we can eat almost anything.
