Maglights

OMFG...LMAO LOLOLOL

haha, I agree, this post was kind of pointless...but at least the responses made me laugh! Thanks!

Dumb Post + Intelligent Responses = Worthwhile Info In Spite of Itself :)

I have a "collection" of Surefires, Fenix, RAW, etc. but still keep a few Mag's around the house as "workers". Definitely not "useless".

I like my mag lights. I want to convert my 4 D maglite into an led. But I have only seen the 3D led conversion kit available around here. Bulb failier is the drawback of the maglite, and they do fail easily when dropped. The led conversion would make it one of the best lights available. I use rechargeable NiMH batteries in both the AA light and the 4D. Sure puts out a good light for a long time.

If you cant get hold of anything locally you should order an everLED bulb replacement from one of the suppliers on www.everled.com. They work in 1 - 6 cell maglites. Its based on a 1w luxeon star LED.

I use one in my 2D maglite and like it. Its a lot brighter than the standard bulb and drop resistant too. I doubt they are as bright as the new magLED modules though, as they use a 3W luxeon. On the up side, its bright enough for a general purpose flashlight and 1W uses less power than 3W so you should get better battery life

Compared to some of the more modern guns out there, the old 1911 is outdated and therefor useless. If something goes bump in the night, are you going to grab a baseball bat over the 1911 because its old school?

If something works, it works. A '55 Chevy with the inline 6 and three on the tree won't keep up with a Honda Accord, but it will get you where you're going.:D

The Horror! Please... Until you repent, DO NOT go outside during a thunderstorm. I am hoping like hell you are kidding. There is no debate, the most modern handgun is the venerable 1911 . Thanks John Browning!

This post made me think, "I don't have any Maglites".
So went to Wally World and picked up a Four D, almost sprung for the LED conversion bulb but that was 20 bucks alone, maybe when the bulbs go out on the new one. I have owned many different lights in the past included mags, they surely are worth the money. Plus they are always good for giving punks some Flashlight therapy if needed.

I still can't believe ya killed a Mag Light , in 25 years I've never mangled one to the point I couldn't rebuild it.

One thing that a Mag-lite is good for is modifying with 6 LEDs:

You can also increase output up to around 800 lumens (compared to the stock 40 lumens) by installing a Welch-Allyn "superbulb", requiring a metal reflector and pyrex lens so it won't melt, and after-market rechargeable battery pack:

Notice the smooth reflector on the left, which increases throw. The others have an orange peel texture for a smoother, more floody output.

right on

To make the 2AA Mini-MagLite more useful - try the MJLED -

Here's a nice page on them -

http://home.mchsi.com/~lambda_lights/smjled.htm

Unfortunately Lambda seems to be sold out of the MJLED -
but the Sandwich Shoppe seems to have plenty of them - including the nice PR-2 versions.

Some of my reviews -

super MJLED drop-in for MiniMag 2AA

MJLED drop-in for MiniMag 2AA

and Post #90 for the PR2 MJLED (which fit the 2D or 2C MagLites)

Just ordered SMJLED, wonder how would it compare to the original bulb.

Lets see what do a lot of more modern guns have in common over the ol 1911. Lets see Light rails, high capacity mags, safety decockers, double action trigger groups, ambi controls, alloy parts, better calibers, porting, and much more. There are a lot of guns better than a 1911. OBTW I really do like my 1911's.

Uh ashtxsniper, I see your knowledge of 1911 based pistols is rather limited, as everything you mentioned can be had on a 1911 platform. Light rails, hi-cap magazines(2 of my .40cal 1911s hold 21rds), ambi controls, double action triggers(who would want one though), better calibers...Huh?? Not that any of them are better than the .45acp as it and the .357mag still rank as the #1 man stopper handgun cartridges of all time, but you can get 1911s in .22, .30luger, .38 super, 9mm, 9x23, .40 S&W, .400 Cor-bon, 10mm, .45 super, .50AE and so on, so I'm not sure which cartridge your speaking of that's better but not available. Porting has been around and done on 1911s almost as long as the 1911 has been around even though porting is a piss poor idea on a defensive handgun. Now, what does the "much more" mean, and I am still waiting for that list of better guns.:D

MJLED Compared to standard MiniMag 2AA - both with fresh AA alkaline batteries.

Beam is much smoother with a more noticable side-spill - the regular incandescent bulb can be forcussed more intensely though.

BUT the MJLED has a runtime in excess of 30 hours vs. about 5.5hours on the stock incandescent bulb claimed by MagLite.

Got my SMJLED today! Installed it, not impressed with the color, too blue, wish I got the MJLED instead. Maybe a set of new alkaline/lithium batteries will help? Brightness is pretty much the same as incand bulb at least to my eye, but as you said beam is smoother. Run time sounds good thou, will work great together with my 3D Magled, and nightstar shake light if doomsday ever come and I run out of batteries. :D

That's what I found too all the Super MJLEDs are blue-tinted.
I don't think batteries can improve the tint.

Beware there is a slight chance that Fresh lithium AAs could burn out the (s)MJLED - the advice is to use them a bit before using with (s)MJLEDs.

Personally I think that plain alkaline AAs are fine in the (s)MJLEDs - since the run time is already ridiculously long with the good brightness.

According to reports at CPF even when the alkaline AAs go dim with the (s)MJLEDs - there is apparently still Lots of juice left in them to power the other favorite/inexpensive Nite-Ize LED Drop-in for MiniMag 2AA for quite a bit longer.

I like my U2 better than my mags, that being said a 700 watt maglight kicks all ass, the hotwire mods are pretty sweet too many dozens of watts of halogen bulbs on a stippled reflector is excellent.

IIRC the 700 watter had a Par64 28 vdc light overdriven and a large external battery pack, but it made a great aluminum club.

I ended up leave it alone with the alkaline batteries and put it in my parents' car glovebox. Since they will never change the batteries, and rarely use it, the minimag with smjled seems to be a good choice.

Ordered a fenix P3D for my pocket, and will keep the MagLED 3D in my jeep (when winter comes, now I don't even lock my door with soft top on).
