Maglite Corp. to join new century?

I know some companies make retrofit LEDs for Maglite bodies, but does anyone know if Maglite has any plans to introduce its own LED flashlight?

It's not like LEDs are some passing fancy!

They're still using Non-Xenon bulb.

So they are WAY behind! And they seem quiet
happy to stay there.
Since they have probably %30 of the market that is there choice.

They make a great base for Mods. and a pretty decent light for
most people.

Maybe they will release a new color

P.S. CandlePowerForums.com is the place to talk about it.
They call them M@g though.

I thought the general opinion around the led crowd was to call them &#115hit.

I'm getting an Inova X5MT(hopefully this week), and either junking or giving my mini-mag away.

Well, M@g is one of the nicer ones.
As VampyreWolf pointed out there have been
some far worse words then even that used.

It seems M@glite gave a small flashlight company
some legal trouble. and since that "campany" is
one of the most liked on CPF.
Everyone got pretty mad at M@g, So to show
there anger to the company in a real way,
they seem to have pretty much agreed that
none of them will ever again say the name currectly!

M@g is the easyest to over look, but still makes the point.
It also saves the "A" key for typeing Arc Flashlights Arc-AAA ;)

When I was younger, and more naive, I thought my M@G was the bee's knees. It was "metal" after all ;) It even had a spare bulb. It was water resistant. It had exceeded all the possible expectations any 12 year old could possess. It had even sub'd in for a lightsaber on a few occasions... Now that I own an Inova X5, I realize just how much of a child I was. My X5 is in my jacket pocket wherever I go now, and is just absolutely great. With frequent power outages during storms where I live, the X5 is a godsend. No more M@G. No more worries.

Regards,

Shaun.

I have to disagree about Mags.

I own a Surefire, and it rocks. I never leave the house without it and am likely getting another one soon. It compares favorably to the big D Mags, and absolutely blows the doors off the Mini-mag.

However these products are aimed at two different markets. A Surefire or Inova is for people like us who want the best flashlight that can be found for our needs, even if it is pricey and hard to find.

Mags are for people who want to see in the dark. For comparitively litle money they provide a tough, bright, and reliable source of illumination that will serve perfectly well for most people. There are probably more Mags serving in glove boxes and tool chests than any other flashlight, and I would venture that in almost all cases the owners are quite pleased with them.

Lets not compare Mercedeses and Chevys.

Don't toss it. Put in a LED insert and add a couple Lithium AA's and you have a very decent light for which there are a ton of accesories available for.

Or use it for less critical tasks. I put a Nite-Ize fiber optic cap on one of my mini-mags and now I use it for a gun light.

I looked at the Opalec insert, but I haven't really found a cheap source of lithiums for it. Probably end up as a gift to someone.

fishbulb> I'd say m@g is closer to FORD. Always needing parts and power.

You can get cheaper 123a Toshiba batteries ($1/each) from Botach Tactical, but I hear the SF batteries are better. I have both and have not noticed a performance difference.

The lithium AA batteries are more expensive than regular AA but they last longer, have a 10 year shelf life and operate in a more extreme temperature range. If you shop around you can find a 4 pack of lithium AA's for around $7.

IIRC ArcFlashlight just started selling some CR123.
There price is $4 for 5 + $8 shiping = $12 for 5
But the shipping is fixed at $8 so you can order
100 batteries for only 4x20+8 = $88
(Thread on CPF)

Surefire just started selling there batteries at factory price
(I.E. What they used to sell them to there dealers for)
Last I saw the Surefire batteries are really Sanyos :D

I had been buying Energizer AA Lithiums for when I'd be out late or working in a freezer. The times when normal batts die due to temp.
but at 2 for $5(at low end, up to $8/2 batts), they weren't cheap.

I've seen 123a batts go for about $3-5/batt, so I was quite pleased to find this link.

Exactly what I did. Non-critical retirement....

My wife still prefers to carry a 3D in her car. Feels that it can double as a club if necessary. Hafta agree with that.

Finances didn't allow me to get the Inova this check, mont end...

damn my mag is yellow right now, even with fresh batts and bulb. Only been using it every day since mid-july 02. Must have a limit on # of hours the circut will allow. Yet another reason to get led.

You'll love the Inova when you finally get it. Way better than any maglite I've ever had...

I know the main difference is a yellow-white as compared to a blue-white (from LEDs). I also hear that once you go LED you never go back to incan.

The way I look at it, I'm on my last bulb for the 2AA, and have about 2 weeks to run it out. Month end check buys the Inova, and get rid of the 2AA. I'll spend as much in a year running the X5MT as I do in about a month with the 2AA.

I think you would be a lot happyier with an ARC-LS.
I don't know you're budget but if the $80 I've seen them for lately
is to high, Then I have an extra Arc-LS1, I'm trying to sell / trade.
Should be about 3x brighter then a X5 and run for 2 hours on just 1x123. :D
