Magnacut Folder

If you’re even a bit intrigued by a Sebenza and you’re getting into knives. Buy it, buy it right now. Literally almost zero risk, holds resale value amazing.

There I just saved you a lot of money! Or, you can spend $100 and then $175 and then $250 etc trying to capture something “close” and you’ll eventually land on Chris reeves anyway 😎

Seriously they are fantastic I’ve been carrying and using them since 2005ish and they are well worth it. Not that there aren’t a great companies to try out there but the Sebenza is still my benchmark folder

Have had this one since 2008 and my current edc is in magnacut which CRKs has done an excellent job with. Impressive steel done by an impressive company. They can be hard to find fyi but put your email on a few dealers site to notify you when they are in stock and you’ll get one

Whatever you do, do not order a Sebenza or Umnumzaan directly from Chris Reeve Knives.. It'll take a while for you to get it.

So what are peoples thoughts on Magnacut's overall utility as an edc in terms of sharpening? Can you abuse it? Is it a pain to work out any rolls or micro-chipping? Admittedly, I'm not a super steels kind of guy. Had some thinly ground and very hard 4v chip on me once and it was a real pain to work out... so much so I haven't dipped my toe back in since.
I was carrying a BM Mediator for a long time. S90v edge held up extraordinarily well considering I work in the oil field. There's no such thing as an easy day for a knife. That being said, it chipped on a staple while using it to cut tape. Then I picked up a Protech Strider in magnacut and a spyderco in s90v that wasn't coated like the Mediator. The Spyderco showed a lot of surface rust after only 12 hours. Had to stop and clean that with wd40 and a rag. The Protech in magnacut? I've been cutting boxes, shrink wrap, pallet bandng, stripping wire, etc. It's still sharp as the first cut. It's also been exposed to produced water, crude, dirt, dust, cleaning solvents, grease, etc. Blade still looks brand new even if the coating ok the handle is starting to wear after just 3 days. 🤣 Magnacut is literally a miracle IMHO.

That’s what I like to hear. So it holds up really well? Worth the extra money for the extra work you get out of it?
I think many if not most of the more serious knife aficionados on here - if commanding the means - will eventually own a CRK. Whether they keep or not may come down to many factors. I own a small pile of knives but not an obscene number. I tend to rotate in and out of models. I waited a long time for a factory direct Sebenza small 21, lefty, micarta inlay, double silver thumb stud, s35vn. I carry it in a leather pouch riding deep in the pocket. I've lost a couple knives over the years carried by the clip, most recently a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in ZDP-189. I immediately replaced it (still have NIB). I'm not risking it with my CRK. I do carry and "love" the CRK.

I use for all things daily knife: Mylar bags, boxes, breaking down cardboard, packaging in general. Not one person ever has noticed it as a "grail" knife or said anything. I don't care. It's not why I own it.

If I could, I would eventually upgrade it to Magnacut. I've been a follower, subscriber to Dr. Larrin Thomas for years, certainly before he developed Magnacut with Crucible. I've been following the story including the discussions regarding optimal HRC. Seems like the sweet spot is 63-64 especially for a small EDC blade. I'd be plenty happy going lower in bushcrafting knife like CRK's backpacker.

Long winded way of recommending that you "Buy once, cry once" and get a CRK in Magnacut. They retain phenomenal resale value if you decide it's not your preference; not your grail. Look into the company. I'm attaching part of their service fees. All free. You can send your beat up knife in to them for a free spa treatment. What other company offers this? None spring to my 50 year old brain.

Chris!!!!
Great to hear from you!
The knife is extremely well made. Great in hand, disappears in pocket, super smooth action and a serious slicer.
Very happy with it and will check out their pens.

I found the CRK for me! It’s not a folder. It’s The Backpacker. 63-64 Magnacut in 4” fixed blade. No moving parts, no fuss. Now how long is it going to take me to get my hands on one?!

There's no telling how long it's going to take! Lol. Either order a new one and wait forever or hope you find what you're looking for second hand? Also, try checking the authorized dealers on the CRK website.

I have been waiting over a year.
