magnesium fire steel

Andrew i had the exact same problem with that, and evetually the rod fell out.......i was mad, so i bought a ferro rod and a striker, and i just keep the mag block close at hand.

I know this dosent solve the problem, but at least yur not alone

Wow! I'd contact Doan's- they might not refund/replace but they probably will. There is something very wrong with that, they might want to take a look at it.

You are scraping with the blade, not trying to whittle or anything odd? And it isn't a serrated?

I don't want to be a smart @ss, but you know you have to scrape the magnesium first (to get a small pile of magnesium shavings) and then the ferro rod on top of the magnesium to get a spark to ignite the magnesium shavings.

It looks like you've been scraping the ferro rod for shavings instead of the lower(big) magnesium block.

So first: scrape magnesium untill you have a small pile, then use the ferro rod on top of the magnesium bar to get a spark, to ignite the shavings. Don't use too much pressure on the ferro rod, just enough to get a few sparks. Then you should get a nice short (extremely hot) fire from the burning magnesium:thumbup:

i dont think he was doing that, mine looked like his, and i didnt scrape the ferro rod for shavings.....:jerkit:

No I have not been scraping the ferro rod for shavings. When I do scrape the magnesium block I can get a huge pile of shavings like in the picture on the block. That would take me forever. Anyway it is not serrated. Good to see someone else had my problems moonshine

Guys,

I was just trying to help. The block/ferro rod looked like it was scraped like that, and the magblock looked liked it wasn't touched at all....

Take care,
CZ

ya I appreciate the help. The reason the mag block wasnt used a lot is because I was trying to start some fires with just sparks.

I used to not be a big fan of the mag. block, instead opting for the fire steel. After I got used to using one though, I now carry a Doan as my #1 fire starter. I hope this is not a serious problem. It may end up making me reconsider.

Wow. That looks really worn down. I use a bit of hack saw blade with most of my ferro rods, this save my knife blade, and sends a shower of sparks with minimal effort. I have tried grinding the teeth down just a tad, if not you will leave deep cut/groves in the ferro rod. I keep a light my fire scout to practice with and carry either a light my fire army, of the 4 incher from ecamps out to the field.
