Magnet Fishing

I've never done it, but like you I've seen a few videos of it. seems with the right location you can retrieve some interesting things

Hadn't given it much thought until recently and didn't know it was a "thing"! I guess lots of things can be snagged/found out magnet fishing! Some things are cool, others......not so much!

Well I ordered one see how it goes .

I actually sent a link to an "800 lb" magnet to a friend of mine, and he ended up buying us each one. They arrived recently; but I haven't seen him, yet, to check it out. I suspect that, like any other form of treasure hunting, the yield will be mostly junk.

Wish I had one of these a few years back but not sure if it would have done any good. I was throwing a net to catch herring for bait, and I guess it snagged the clip and pulled it from my cargo shorts pocket and it must have gone into 40ft of muddy swirling Mississippi river water behind a barge.

I really didn't notice it until I went to show my buddy the new lefty pimped Emerson 10 I had just gotten. It had a hand checkered back spacer done by Sal Marinaro back in the day when he did that kind of stuff. Normally I would have never taken such a nice knife on the water, usually carry an old Spyderco police.

That was a cool knife and I tore that boat apart three times looking for it, but that's what must have happened when I sat down and thought about it. Well good luck on your hunt you never now what you might find.

For anyone interested, “Stuff You Should Know” podcast recently did an episode on magnet fishing. I’m eager to see your catches! I’m considering buying a magnet and trying, though the waterways around here don’t seem to me to be a very good “hunting ground” so to speak. Good luck!

That's how they get ya. You latch onto something, get stuck, buy a bigger magnet in attempt to haul out the prize (the prize, of course, being the magnet you threw in)
Or a grappling hook , that will probably be next .

My friend in the U.K. does this, he has winch attached to the magnet. He made enough from junk to buy a boat but it took 3 years. The boat is pretty old but it does have an inboard and a small cabin that would sleep a couple people below the deck.

I've tried a little. It was a nice way to clean fishing hooks out of the outlet. Kids sometimes play there and accidents have happened over the years. I tried elsewhere but not much luck.

Mostly, I got stuff that was rusted to the point of mystery, or was only a piece of something. Another issue is that either decades of rusted junk had upped the iron content of the lake bed along the shore or there was just lots of iron in the small stones along the bottom. My magnet kept getting clogged and it was a real pain.

I tried magnet fishing for my Griptilian when I kicked it off my pier. I never found that knife, even with a big speaker magnet.
