Where do you guys buy yours.

Or do you make one using a hard drive magnet?

I stop using one, reason is the lack of feel with the steel I just find a way to hold the stuff.

But any auto or hardware store should have one

I only use it for trying to get my stock flat on the platen. I think it would be too bulky to grind with. I got mine at HF. I think they are 150 lb pull.

CAUTION!!!!

If your platen is metal, a strong magnet can have disconcerting results - as the blade gets sucked into the moving belt with - what - maybe 150 lbs force.

Try it first with the belt turned off - so you know what to expect.

Rob!

Andy,
if its not real strong, the blade will come off the magnet. my platen is made of hardened O-1 and I haven't had any problems.

Also, I doubt it is really 150lbs as you might think, because I can pull the blade off the magnet with one hand. I'm strong, but not that strong:D. I think 150 lbs is just some rating scale they use.

I picked up one at True Value hardware store. Not sure what it's orginal purpose was but it was in the same aisle as the rest of the magnets and has a handle attached and is very narrow. Holds well for tapering the tang.

Andy I am glad you started this thread , can one of you folks tell me how do you demagnetize the blade when your done ? I assume the blade gets magnetized .

I'm pretty sure heat treatment will permanently demagnetize any magnetized metal, I know magnets will lose their magnetism after only a few hundred degrees.

I have a 100 pound pull and a 50 pound pull magnet for doing many different tasks in the shop, found mine at Lowes.

They sell a small machine called a de-magnatizer...It works great,I got mine out of the junk yard and just had to put on a new switch, not sure who sells them....

Something to think about ...... Yes the blade will get magnatized and if you dont de-magnatize it you will be asking for trouble during the final finishing or afterwards.Big grit will get attracted to the blade and thus when your using fine paper or a polishing cloth the bigger steel particles will scratch the fire outta the finish...

Glen, I use something like this one off fleabay:
demagnetizer
Just draw the workpiece across from one end to the other a couple times.
