Magnet for holding while grinding

I never have had mine to become magnetized. The blade is only on the magnet for a short time. Maybe the heat from grinding has something to do with it, or since the grinder is grounded any charge that could build up is disappated or dispursed and the blade doesn't become magnetized. I don't know, but it hasn't been a problem I've had. The only time I have a problem with the blade being magnetized is when I make the choil with my dremel and carbide rasp.

Andy when I tapper my tangs I use a small file handle with a old 3/16 drill bit stuck in the end. It allows you to really see what you are doing when working your tapper, it also allows you to pinpoint your pressure to remove material were it needs to be removed. Yes you have to replace the bit from time to time. After reading I went in the shop and stuck a blade to my magnet and started to tapper, it was to bulky for me to see what was going on. This method is a bit cheaper as well

Good luck

Spencer,
That sounds like a good idea. I may try that too. I only use my magnet for the flats. I usually just push with my thumb for tapering the few tangs that I have done. It can get kind of hot:D

Spencer, can you give me a visual here. I'm not too quick... being from Louisianna, and all.

Do you have the book "making knives" with Bob Loveless, at any rate I will try to get a picture for you.

I got one from the local Tru Value yesterday...a yellow 100 lb one, with a plastic handle. Wow! What a difference when grinding the flats of tangs! Instead of trying to hold on to the blade with my fingertips, this thing leaves my hands "free" to hold the tang flush against the flat platten.
Thanks for the suggestion!
